Title: XP firewall
Post by: Lona on February 14, 2005, 17:50
Is there any versions of XP that doesn't come with built in firewall?

My friend who has XP  has been getting lots of  adware installed on her pc and I was checking  and couldn't find xp firewall anywhere on her system.

I ran ad-aware and found 96 entries some of which were rated High.

The XP firewall was only introduced in the sp2 update lona and wasn't on before that.

I think that XP has always had a firewall but it was turned OFF by default.  SP2 changed it to always ON.  I'm not sure how good the firewall is though Lona.   :?

Best thing is to tell her to get SP2, or a third party firewall, such as Sygate, or Zone Alarm.  Non-SP2 Windows did have a firewall, but it only monitored incoming traffic, and as has already been said, was not enabled by default.
