After watching the money programme on BBC2 last night about VOIP calls via Skype and other methods I decided to download Skype and give it a try.
I had heard about it a year or two back but never bothered with it.
Anyway I downloaded and installed it last night and got Lona and John (Suffolk 2000) to do the same and one to one it is amazingly clear but it wasnt as good in a 3 way chat.
Its much clearer than voice over msn messenger and has the advantage of conference calling of up to 4 people at the same time along with written messaging and file sharing all for free :D
I emailed a few people about it and got a call just as I was about to go out this evening off some weirdo who lives near Skipton, (Hi Tony  ), seeing as hes notoriously tight he thinks its great even though he gets his phone calls for only 2p each now anyway
Apparently Simon is on it too but he has kept it to himself unless he has only just started using it
Anyway if anyone fancies free phone calls anywhere in the world from pc to pc all you need is a microphone and speakers and 33kb or faster internet connection, think you need windows 2K or XP too, then have a look on :
www.skype.com
You can even buy a proper USB phone handset to use with it if you prefer from around a tenner upwards :)
-
My views on skype are fine if you want to talk to more than one person and have a discussion with up to 4 people but on a one to one I would rather pay the 2p and talk on the phone.
I suppose it has it's uses for contacting folks around the world. It's early days yet and I have only used it once so I will report back when I have used it over a longer period. :)

It was probably me Sandra. I don't use it myself but Mrs Clive uses it all the time to speak to her colleagues since she works from home. Usually they are 1 to 1 converstations but sometimes it's a conference with several people.

I must have another Simon XXXX in my address book :?
Ooooh thats a really scary thought isnt it, two or possibly more Simons, maybe hes had himself cloned

Not me! I use (funnily enough) Adept Telecom (maybe that's where he went!), which used to be Eurobell.

Srangely enough Joudi says he mentioned it over a year ago, I cant see his post but it appears that DJ did too as I have found this :

I did say that I had heard of it ages ago but not tried it :(
-
At that time I was wondering where to put it Sandra. I hesitated between this section "Software suggestion" and "Tech News", (or even "Useful sites and other places"). If my memory is good (unfortunately that's not always the case  ) I have put it in "Tech News". But not sure!
-
Here it is. I got it:

I'm still wondering, why the "Search" option didn't catch it?

I've yet to come across a forum where the "Search" feature actually works, Joudi! :|
-
We mustn't forget that we have had a massive cull of old posts too. Theoretically they should only be non-technical ones.
-
and the conversion between the software might well have cause errors.
-
It never worked before, Sam.
-
hehe, well i also have never come across a search on a forum that works well!
it might even be better to use this
This is the google search engine with pc-pals as the site to search - it does bring up some odd items. probably as bad as the internal search engine :-)
-
 That's the best Google rating we've ever had!
Results 1 - 10 of about 1,390 from pc-pals.com
-
Sweet!
-
indeed, not bad :-)
-
I wonder what number would come up if we were to type "Clive AND PC-Pals" (without the quotes) into Google?
Several million perhaps?
-
Sadly, I tried it and one of the results was very strange:
almost anything at xaosearch.com
... PC Pals Forum - Solve your PC problems for free and have fun too! ... 1.. (Almost) Anything

xaosearch.com/almost_anything.html - 16k - Supplemental Result - Cached - Similar pages
I've seen hijacked webpages before but why would anyone bother to hijack that? :)
-
clive - that occurs all the time, if you search for krioma.net my sight you find that i have various entries in online porn directories - not that i have had anything like that on my site! its just a random script producing random / crap results.
-
Just dont do a search for Clive and Sheep

A company called Skype (pronounced to rhyme with tripe) is quickly becoming the Microsoft of internet telephony...
I've been pronouncing it Sky-pee!
-
Trust you, Simon. :D :D :D :D :D :D :brain:
-
OK so is it Lyenux or Linnux? I have always presumed the former but I heard someone use the latter pronunciation.
-
I have always assumed Lyenux.
Another funny one, in the Harry Potter books, I always read the girls name 'Hermione', as 'Her-me-own'. It was only when I saw the film, I realised it was 'Her-myon-ee'.
-
I always knew that you southerners could speak proper english Simon
If you come and live "Oop t' North" for a few weeks then we will teach you how to speak properly, wont we Tony

linux- who knows i interchange myself
-
What is the point of having academics if you don't know either? You lot are supposed to lead the way!
-
hehe!
well we all use unix to do most of the work on, with linux being the thing we have as the desktop.
its probably best just to go by the os name, e.g. Suse, Mandrake...
-
linux- who knows i interchange myself
Really? Who do you become? :susp:
-
Samwise the brave
-
I wonder if Skype would be a good way of file sharing as it encrypts the voice part on the telephony side, maybe it does the same on file transfers too
-
i have a feeling there are p2p out their that do this already.
and encrypt probably not very heavily.
