Pity it was an American site.
We have very large spiders that only appear in September in our house.
They never crawl up the walls but run over the carpet with great speed. I usually see them late at night and they are about half inch is size not counting their legs.
They are a kind of grey colour with black stripes on their backs.
They only started appearing since we opened up the chimney so I guess they are coming down from there.

We always get some pretty big spiders inside the house during September too, but ours also climb up the walls. If cornered they will bite and cause considerable pain!

Bite??
I never knew British spiders could bite.

All spiders bite Lona.
Spiders kill by biting their victim and injecting their venom
Fortunately for us in the British Isles they arent usually big enough to pierce the skin and if they are then their venom isnt of sufficient quantity or strong enough to do us much harm.
I was bitten once by one which was lurking on a hand towel as I was washing my hands, I assumed it was a splinter or something until I pulled the towel away and saw a rather unpleasantly large spider on my finger

I used to just pick them up with my hands and throw them out. But one objected and left two very neat fang marks on the tip of my finger. Now I use a duster instead.
