Title: IE Problem - Some links wont work
Post by: Scotty_CFC on December 09, 2005, 12:13
Hey

I got a problem with my Internet Explorer, some links won't work, and it seems to be links that open new windows. Also, my MSN messenger is affected, as when i press a link such as "Email", it wont work.

I have temporarily switched to Mozillas Browser as it is unaffected. Any idea what the problem is?

I have spy/adware scanned, virus scanned, and cleaned up the registry. All without detecting any problems.

Any suggestions appreciated.

No, I thought it was at first, but when I turned it off, I still had the same problem.

Try temporarily disabling your firewall to see if that is the culprit.

Nope, I even reset the firewall. I've also tried resetting web settings, tried low security level settings, updated activex controls and uninstalling the last known program installed before the problem.

Maybe a System Restore to an earlier date might work?

The  earliest restore point is after the problem  :(

Not at the moment sorry, I just wanted some clarification  :(

I would have gone with whats already been said though, either the popup blocker settings or a firewall problem :?

Are these normal HTTP links or are they HTTPS or FTP ?

Are they links to files not just a webpage ie .jpg or .swf at the end of the link ?

I think that the big clue here is the fact that the websites work in Mozilla.

This seems to have worked in the past:-

1) Launch IE, go to Tools then Internet Options.

2) On the General tab (which it launches to) delete cookies and temporary internet files, including all offline content.

3) Go to Advanced tab, lower right, click on restore defaults and click Apply.

4) Go to Programs tab, middle left, click on reset web setting, (recommend you deselect reset homepage).

5) Go to Privacy tab (if present), if Default Levels button is active click it.

6) Go to Security tab and for each zone set levels to Default Levels if said button is active, click OK.

If that doesn't work, then run all of the following, clicking OK after each:-

Start > Run > regsvr32 urlmon.dll
Start > Run > regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
Start > Run > regsvr32 Msjava.dll
Start > Run > regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
Start > Run > regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
Start > Run > regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
Start > Run > regsvr32 Browseui.dll
Start > Run > regsvr32 Shell32.dll

I went through the list Simon suggested, and unfortunatly, none of them have worked. After a several days of working with this, it is definately links that opens in new windows. The problem acts like a pop up blocker, even though the only popup blocker on my system (the one intergrated into ie6) is off, and the firewall. I dont know what is used to open new windows, could someone tell me so I could maybe google into it for a couple of hours?

You might find some more help in the link below, Scotty.  Alternatively, have you thought about switching to another browser, such as Firefox or Mozilla?
