Does anyone know of any decent programs that allow you to convert Mpeg files to Video DVDs?
I have spent the best part of all day faffing about with a program called Nerovision Express. However, as with all programs begining with the word "Nero", I would probably be better off with a virus on my system, if only because viruses too are useless but use less hard disk space. After sitting around for over three hours and then going to my sister's for a while to pass some time, I got back here just in time to see Nerovision Express fail towards the end of the transcoding stage. Five hours for nothing. Well not quite, I burned the Mpeg as a data file onto a blank DVD using Deepburner, so I can at least watch it in a fashion.

Not tried it myself but I've heard good things about Blaze, Dave. You can download a trial version here (http://www.blazemp.com/downloads.html), but Sandra may know of some free ones, as I've heard she dabbles in this kind of thing. :whistle:

I've just had a look at that link to Blaze and it looks like the works and only about a tenth of the size of that Nero garbage I was trying earlier. I think I'll give it a try.

Use WinAvi Dave then burn the files it creates in Nero or possibly Deepburner if it does DVD formats.
I didnt realise that Nero Vision took so long to convert before burning.
Were you using Nero 6 or Nero 7 ?
WinAvi and Nero 7 are available, if you look in the right place :wink:

Does anybody know of any free software that will convert Mpeg1 to Mpeg2? I tried to convert it with WinAVI, but although the program reports that the conversion is complete (or words to that effect) it remains Mpeg1.

Thats upgrading from the original format.
Can possibly burn it as an SVCD not VCD but I am not sure of that :?

Well, I have finally given up. While converting an Mpeg to DVD might be simple in theory, in practice it is impossible unless one was to give up one's job and spend the rest of their life in front of the computer. Not only does the conversion takes days or weeks (depending on the size of the original file and the size it will come out at) but it can then take another week downloading all the bits and pieces to actually get it onto the DVD. From now on, unless it fits on a CD, any video file will be burned onto DVD as a data file - five minutes instead of five days and while its nothing flashy, it can still be played.
That Blaze program looks OK, but has a steeper learning curve than advanced Microsoft Access, something I doubt very few people could be bothered with. Nerovision (like anything Nero) just takes up hard disk space - it spends five hours converting only to report a "fail" at about 95% of the job.
SonicDVDit is about as much use as Sonic the hedgehog - again give up work or forget it. I spent a whole day waiting for that thing to convert a 1.3GB file, only for the finished product to come out at 5.4GB - too big for the DVD disk. Asking on a forum what to do next, I was told to split the file. I could have done that with the original 1.3GB file and put it on two CDs if I wanted it on two disks and it would only have taken me ten minutes!

ummm I have an idea, might not work with all types of encoded mpeg (depends on how it was incoded) but I use CyberLink PowerProducer 2 Gold which is quite good at doing mpeg straight to DVD.

I cant understand why youre having difficulties Dave :?
It should be a straightforward simple procedure and should be relatively quick with lots of programs :?

I've finally converted it using WinAVI as Sandra suggested. I'm at my sister's watching ManU vs Wolves on Sky and it took from ten minutes before kick-off until the begining of the second half to create a file of 4.2GB, but at least it will now fit on the DVD with very little to spare. It's fortunate that the original file was only 1.3GB. What happens if they are any bigger?
I'm now letting Nero Express burn it while I watch the second half. If it fails this time I think I'll go out and buy the bloody thing.

I think it fits it to the maximum size of a DVD.
If it doesnt, as in the case of the one you said turned out at over 5 gig, then dont split it as you said someone suggested.
Open the created DVD files in DVD Shrink and that will alow you to fit it on a single DVD :)

I think that you have some other problem with your PC rather than a Nero one. I use Windows ME with only 256MB. Nero Vision3 works fine, converting the video to DVD without any problems.
