PlusNet has beefed up its broadband internet services, with the launch of up to 8Mbps broadband internet connection for £9.99 per month.
The new service, Broadband Pay As You Go Basic, is aimed at people who are currently on a dial-up service, or don't have access to internet connection at home.
For £9.99 a month, you get 50MB of usage, with additional time online that can be bought for 0.024p per MB. Subcribers can also get email and webspace for £1.99 extra a month.
If you're switching from another broadband provider to Broadband PAYG Basic, you will be ask to pay a one-off 'regrade fee' of £14.99 and pay for a broadband modem.
Those who sign up for a 12 month contract will have to pay an upfront activation fee of £47, while those taking out a monthly contract will need to pay an upfront activation fee of £58.75.
According to PlusNet, seven million UK homes have computers without internet access and more than four million more are surfing the net using dial-up.

At speeds of up to 8Mb, it wouldn't take long for a user to clock up 50Mb. That 0.024p figure is not correct, Clive. It's actually 0.224p per MB (equivalent to £2.24 per GB).

thats s**te.

Don't beat around the bush, Sam, say what you think!
-
indeed.

I think there are circumstances where it could prove viable. One such example would be a holiday home where having a fast internet connection might be useful to keep in touch with the outside world. We don't all need to download big files you know! Incidentally, does anyone know how to monitor monthly usage?

Have a look at the following link Clive

Its a program called NetMeter. It was recommended by me on a Force9, but I haven't used it yet.

Yes, but it's not just downloading files that uses up the allowance. Surfing the net, and sending / receiving emails counts towards it. Having a faster connection, doesn't always mean using the Internet is faster. It's mainly download / upload speeds which it's advantageous for. Why would anyone want an 8Mb line speed if they are not going to use it for downloading?

Or outright piracy :bobby:

Well, I don't know anyone who would do such a thing, Sandra. :halo:

Thanks for that link DJ. 8-)
In reply to Simon's post I think that 8Mb will become the norm before too much longer. Remember that BT actually lowered my monthly charge when they upgraded me from 2 to 4.5 Meg.
-
but BT suck. :-)

I cannot disagree with that Sam.
