Title: 35mm scanner

I'm still in trouble with my Pacificfilm 1800u scanner.

I've tried Sandra's suggestion and the device manager appears (to me) to be installed OK.

I've also carried out Lona's idea and have down loaded the up to date driver.

All to no avail!

If I look at the hardware wizard, it tells me " the device is working properly"

If I look at properties, it tells me that the scanner is "unavailable".

I have had no reply from PacificImage, so they don't seem to want to help.

HELP.

The only other thing I can think of is that the scanner mirrors are dirty and in need of cleaning.

I have frequent problems with my HP740 scanner not being found and if I clean the mirrors I can get it to work again.

Is the scanner light appearing when you try to scan?

 I have no idea how to clean the mirrors of this scanner. I don't wish to dismantle it - I'll never get it together again!!

I don't know where the other thread is on this now, so forgive me if this has been suggested (one of the reasons why we try to keep topics in one thread), but is this a USB scanner, and have you tried it in a different USB port?

Pros: Inexpensive

Cons: Can't be used

Tried this scanner with 2 computers running different operating systems (Win XP and Win ME). Had the identical troubles, so they are not compatibility problems.

After installation the scanner worked for a short time (enough to scan 5 slides), and then computer "lost" it, i.e didn't recognize the hardware anymore. I had to reboot many times. Rebooting computer helped sometimes, but not always.

Generally, to make 20 scans you will have to reboot 5 to 10 times.

I tried to install newer versions of drivers that I found on the Web, but that didn't make any difference.

In terms of image quality, while slide scans are OK, the scans of negatives tend to be red. Takes a lot of efforts to correct the colors using Photoshop or other editing software.

Don't buy this scanner, at least with currently existing drivers (this is written 9/30/04)I found this review about this scanner, it seems to have major driver problems

I have posted a question on the webpage you suggested, and await an answer.

I have previously, twice asked, and so far have had no reply - not even an acknowledgement!

The response from gmax doesn't look very hopeful!

another thing you could try is, go to "device manager", right click "computer icon",then left click "scan for hardware changes" windows might detect the scanner, give that a go.
