Title: XP Fails to start
Post by: cyberbob on July 30, 2006, 22:29
Hi Guys my first post here, so here goes. A friend of mine has asked to me have a look at his PC.

It starts to boot up, you get the windows loading screen, then it gets to where the user names come up and thats it, the users name don't come up but you can still move the cursor around.

From what he has said, the only thing he thinks could have caused it is, his wife turning it off without shutting it down.

I haven't got much more info about it, Tried restarting from last good known configuration but gets to the same screen, don't really wanna do a full install if I can, Anybody got any idea's???

Even tried a step by step startup and it still gets to the same place.

Hi Cyberbob and  :welcome:

Hopefully an expert will be along to help you soon, but in the meantime, are you able to start Windows in Safe Mode?

Nope, the same happens, it just gets to where the names come up for you to click on, but they don't come up. And like I said it doesn't freeze. Tried starting in safe mode. But it gets to the same spot...

Thats a strange one Bob.

Try loading BIOS Failsafe defaults and see if that sorts it.

If that doesnt work, then assuming that he has got a floppy drive in his pc as newer ones often dont have one unfortunately, use a 98 boot disk and at the A: prompt type C: and press enter.
At the C: prompt type

chkdsk /f   (there is a space between the K and / ) and then press enter.

When its finished reboot and see if thats sorted it

Hello, I'm pretty sure I had this problem a while back as well... I think it was something to do with changing some password settings, I dunno... Anyways I think I just formatted and re-installed windows, but I found this article on "eBay Guides" ( :? I didn't know ebay had guides, lol) here (http://reviews.ebay.com/How-to-fix-computer-login-freezes-and-crashes_W0QQugidZ10000000000882627?ssPageName=BUYGD:CAT:-1:LISTINGS:3)

That will only work if you have a windows XP setup cd though.

Sorry, that's the only article I can find on this subject and the only other things I can suggest are what Sandra has mentioned already...

I don't think there's any way of making the computer login automatically if you can't login to windows in the first place...unless somebody else knows how to do this?

My cousin had same problem on his Medion 8000. Only solution was to use the Medion recovery procedure; seemed to be to do with password settings that got changed/ introduced.
