Title: IDE controller card
Post by: JK on October 21, 2006, 21:26
Hi
A friend of mine is having a problem and asked me to help.
After re-installing windows xp he is unable to see one of his hard drives.
In the computer he has installed a ide controller/raid card to have more hard drives in his pc. The card was purchased from a computer fair and has no name on it. I did find a site that has all the drivers for this type of cards, but without a make and model number what can be done.
He is unable to locate the original driver cd.
Kind regards.

Lesson 1:  Before re-installing Windows, make sure you have all the drivers for your hardware!

If you go into Device Manager (right click My Computer (Desktop icon) > Manage > Device Manager), the card should be listed, but with a  :!:  next to it, and if you right click it, and select Properties, it might give you a clue as to the make and model.

Failing that, he could try taking the card out, and if he's lucky, it might have a make and model number printed on it somewhere.

Failing that, again, he could try a utility such as Belarc Advisor (http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html), which might give some more info as to the hardware installed.

Hope some of that helps, come back to us and let us know the outcome.  :)

Hi
The problem has be fixed. Windows device manager showed yellow
question mark against the device, no driver installed.
Found a mini cd labelled drives. Looking through this cd showed
ide and raid drivers. Using the software you sent it located the device
and driver that was needed. Then pointed windows to it on the cd and the driver was installed
Thanks.
