New words coined to describe things we encounter on the internet can be pretty awful, but 'folksonomy' has been voted the worst of the lot.
A term for describing the classification of web content by tagging key words, folksonomy is a clumsy almalgamation of the words 'folks' and 'taxonomy'.
It was voted the worst word in a survey of 2,000 surfers by pollsters YouGov, conducted to mark the tenth anniversary of the advent of the word 'weblog', which was later shortened to 'blog'.
Other words in the poll were 'netiquette' (online etiquette), 'webinar' (an online seminar), and 'blook' (a book based on a blog).
The word blook prompted the creation of the 'Blooker' Prize, which was started in 2006.
"'Folksonomy' is a worthy winner - a word to make you howl in the night," said Bob Young, chief executive of Lulu, sponsors of the Blooker Prize.
"The web continues to churn out endless new words, amounting collectively almost to a new language," said Young. "'Web-lish' is the new English."
