Title: Pc Restarting
Post by: Messiahhenry on March 01, 2003, 17:34: Im having problems with my pc, it restarts every so often at random times sometimes 5 minutes maybe a few days. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

First .. could you let us know a little more info ..

What operating system do you run ... ie Windows 98se etc
Do you get any error messages
Did this start happening after you installed something
Do you run an up to date virus checker
What type of PC is it and how old is it?

Tracking down a problem like yours can take some doing because there are so many things that can cause the symptoms you describe. Bear with us and we'll get there in the end ::) 8)

Well im running win 2000 and have just reinstalled my comp formating my hardrives and the problem still occurs, it doesnt come up with any error messages it just restarts out of the blue when im typing viewing a webpage playing a game etc. im running a 1ghz geforece 4 512 memory the comps about 2 years old but just upgrading through the years.

How do you have your memory .. is it just a single stick of RAM (512Mb) or is it two 256Mb sticks ... (my reason for asking is it could be a faulty stick of memory)

Post by: Adept on March 01, 2003, 18:09: My money is on memory too Bat :) If the machine has 2 sticks of memory, it would be worth taking them out one at a time to see if the machine is stable with one of them missing.

Do you know what chipset you motherboard is Messiahhenry? I have heard that random resets can happen in Windows 2000 (and XP) on VIA chipsets with older versions of the 4-in-1 driver loaded. Post by: Sandra on March 18, 2003, 00:43: I think you said you were using 2K on your previous thread so not sure if this will work but there is something about XP doing the same restarting and physical memory dump.I will see if I can find the thread and link it on here shortly :-*

Edited to say I have merged this thread with the previous one as its a continuation of the same problem.So it makes my statement about thinking you said you were on 2K on a previous thread look silly ;)

Could be graphics memory problem too.

I've had a lot of problems with restarting PC's.
Usually a stop screen like that indicated a HARDWARE problem, where as overheating will usually give no STOP SCREEN - just a reboot.
