How can I easily convert an .avi file into a playable DVD? Nero wants me to install extra components, which involves reinstalling Nero, and I tried WinAVI last night, and it said there are files missing, or I'm using the wrong file type. All I want to do is watch a TV programme I missed, and have subsequently downloaded. It's a folder containing several .rar files, and also several other files, which are currently unidentified. I have unpacked the .rar files, but don't know what to do with the others.

would it not be easier just to watch it on the computer?
I always have problems doing this.... sort of thing... recently I tried Speed DVD creator and Cucusofts AVI to DVD program, seemed to do the trick... I'm sure Sandra will have much better solutions...
-
You're probably right, Sam, it would be easier to watch it on the computer. ::)
Mind you, my TV has a PC input, so presumably, if I had a long enough VGA lead, I could connect the PC to the TV and watch it that way?
-
I use winAVI video converter Simon. The Dvd quality usually comes out very good. If you have unpacked the rar files you should be showing an avi file. You don't need to do anything with the other ones.
-
When you say there are lots of rar files Simon, is it a multi rar download, ie are they numbere 001, 002 003 etc ?
If WinAvi is saying that there are files missing I assume that its a multi rar file and you havent extracted it correctly.
If so have all the files in the same folder and right click on the lowest number and select extra here.
That will them extract all the rar files into either one file or myabe a bin and cue or similar.

yep you could do that.... I made myself a little linux box that does something similar - though it essentially a hard drive with a video board.
Actually have you extracted the files properly, i.e. does the avi file play fine on your computer?

It extracted them into one file, which played in Winamp, and WMP, Sandra. It was this file I tried to convert, and ran into trouble.

Hi Kaz, thanks for your input. I have used Roxio before, but like you with Nero, I didn't like the way it invaded my machine. Nero does have the facility to do this, but I would have to re-install it, to load Nero Vision. At the moment, the feeling is that I can't be arsed! I just wanted an easy, straightforward way to watch my programme. ;)

See above. I can try extracting it again (yes, it's multiple RAR files), but it seemed to be playing OK in Winamp, although, obviously, I only watched the first few seconds.

just watch it all in winamp... will be quicker! :-)
-
Yes, but it won't be on 37" plasma widescreen! ;D

Oh he's just showing off now !
I use winavi too and it does take a bit of getting used to when u are blonde or bald :o: but I convert all things now on it now with a little help from our Sandra :) . But I must say I never download multi rar's :dunno:

Oh, this is bloody ridiculous! >:( I unpacked the RAR files again, and once again got a single AVI. I then opened WinAVI, clicked to convert to DVD, which 50 minutes later, it said had been completed - but where's the file to burn onto the DVD? Are these things just designed to waste your time, and be as frustrating as hell?
-
OK, I've done it now. Managed to find the Video_TS in a Temp folder, and burned it with Nero. Now I know what I'm doing, I can see WinAVI could be useful - but it might be better if it could automatically burn the disc when the conversion has completed.

What a plonker you are Simon. You are supposed to save it to a folder you will remember. Practice makes perfect. :P

Well, I got the bug, and decided to download another programme I had missed, but the download was so bloody slow, I've already missed this week's as well, so I've given up. Poxy torrents! Was True Dare Kiss any good?
;D
-
Have you opened some ports in the firewall/router to allow max speed downloads via torrents Simon ?
-
Yes, some are OK, it's just this one that was very slow, Sandra

I got all of season 3 of Lost a few weeks back.
Was around 8.5 gig as divx, about 22 episodes.
It took around 5 days as it was coming in ok in early morning but crawling in the evening but I didnt mind as I just left the other pc downloading it :)
I had a marathon session the week after I got it completed, I watched nothing on TV apart from the news.
Whenever I had chance I watched 1 or 2 episodes of Lost.
I finished watching them in about 5 days and the quality was superb with AC3 surround sound from my pc through component at 720p into my Samsung HD CRT TV.
You wouldnt believe how much better it is than those crappy plasma and LCD TVs :)
I then found that I have about 40 gig of TV programs recorded on my Humax PVRs hard drive which I still havent caught up on yet ::)

I thought that, until I bought a 'crappy' 37" plasma, and the picture quality is superb, even on standard definition. I haven't seen anything on HD yet, but from all accounts, the PQ is stunning.

I'm downloading that right now....... I'm sure mine is taking a lot longer than that but then I'm not downloading 24hrs a day tho. But I'm downloading them in order so I can watch as I go :)

I found one that was the whole season Michelle, same as I did with season 1 and 2 but I watched those as they were broadcast on C4.
Since Sky pinched season 3 I was unable to watch it so I decided to wait until it was all uploaded by presumably the same nice person who did the other seasons as a complete series.
Not sure if hes in the USA or Oz but he records them off a HD source and converts them to good quality Xvid.
I think its the best one so far, I am sure that you will like it :)
-
Yeah this is the whole season but i tick which episodes i want as high priority - the rest still download but at low priority but it means i don't have to wait until I've got all of them til I can watch it ;D
oooh you think its the best one :)
By the way sorry , well done Simon :woot:
