been trying to download Hijackthis lately. it was from a link from someone but the link didnt seem to d/l it so I tried elsewhere but when I tried to unzip it, winzip would just close and do nothing.
have tried things like renaming the file but get the same result. All I can think of is its something to do with the 'hijack' bit in the name is getting spotted by something and thinking its an attack. is that possible?
-
hmm it should not - try: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php
-
...or here's a direct download link: http://www.merijn.org/files/HiJackThis_v2.exe
-
blimey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! its getting worse :)
thanks guys. this is whats happening now
Sam, have already tried from the link you said and it didnt work. Simon tried your link and started to d/l then closed after about 2 seconds.
using firefox I didnt even get to the link sites, Firefox just shut. IE started to d/l then stopped as said earlier.
weird
-
Umm... it's working for me, and I've just downloaded it. Do you want me to email you the program?
-
hmm that is odd... probably worth running a quick virus / spyware scan.
Any particular reason you have been trying to get hijackthis, precautionary?
btw I tried the first download link on the site I gave you, trend micro wouldnt allow me todo anything with firefox, argh! Anyway the second link (and incidentally the one simon gave) worked fine. So it *should* work, but who knows. If you want I have downloaded the file and will gladly mail it to you - its only just over a Mb.
-
well.. both me and simon came to the same conclusion, I'm not sure I like it when that happens :o: ;D

Great minds think alike! :tease:

great minds.....thats right isnt it :)
I have been getting some alert warnings from my anti virus that it found some infected files. I go through the usual process of cleaning/deleting them but after about a week they re-appear. Have been in touch with the AV people, NOD32, who have helped me with a few ideas, scan in safe mode, scan in safe mode with system restore off etc.... but all have failed so far. So they now say try Hijackthis and report to them. didnt work so got back in touch and they said try their online scanner which just picked up the same problems.
I cant even google any info on the 'infected' files or the trojan it says they are infected with.
-
NOD32 usually has a good reputation. As I said, I can email you HijackThis direct if you like.
Alternatively, you could try a different online scanner, such as F-Secure (http://www.f-secure.com/security_center/), and see if it helps. I think you may have to use Internet Explorer to use it though. :ack:
-
an email would be great please guys only if its no bother to you though
-
i expect simon has already mailed you.. so I wont bother at the moment.. if he hasnt just say and ill mail it ya in a bit, but i expect he has...
-
Sent - no bother at all. :)
-
opppsss dont know what happened there. went into cheeky mode and sent both of you my email addy :o: :o:
but it didnt send ;D ;D ;D so I'll re send to Simon.
Thanks very much aswell Sam

It's already been sent to the email in your profile, Baz, but let me know if you want it sent to a different one.
-
no thats fantastic Simon but you'll never guess what...........
outlook express shuts down when I try to read it ;D ;D
ps. can you see my email addy in the forum posts?
-
No, Admins have special powers, Baz. ;)
Suggest you restart in safe mode to get the email?
-
thought so, perks of the job eh!
will try that. thanks for the help will let you know what happens
-
Don't stay online too long in safe mode though, as you will be unprotected.
-
Never known anyone be able to get online in safe mode Simon, is it really possible :dunno:
If the email is in his inbox then he can possibly open that while hes in safe mode, if its something thats loading with the drivers thats causing problems when windows is running fully.

Yes, that's what I meant, Sandra. I think he'd downloaded it, but couldn't open it. Don't really know why I said about being online, but the intention was good.
-
still couldnt get it in safe mode. same result.....email opens for maybe 3 seconds then outlook express shuts down.
Ive been through all my progs what I can think of may be stopping it but can find nothing.
Its not really that important guys and I might just leave it now, running out of things to try :) but if you have any more ideas I will try them. its just a bit puzzling as to why its happenning.
Thanks to all for the help

In nod you have to designate what you want to do with the viruses when it finds them. Do a scan and go to the actions tab and check the box that says clean on alert and check the other box to the left that says delete if cleaning cannot be preformed. That way whatever nod finds will be taken care of.
Here's another tip, use two antivirus programs. Install avgfree. Whatever one doesn't find the other will. I have both nod32 Pro and avg install on my machine and i've been clean for months.
-
Thanks Bob unfortunatly I have tried all the options when scanning even from NOD techies themselves said do a scan and clean with system restore off. This had the same result of working but picking up the same fault a rew days later. The way I have it set at the moment with the 'prompt for response' option selected, I get the choice of what to do and the details that the file can safely be deleted, which I do.
I had two AV programs years ago and they seemed to clash. Had AVG then bought McAfee and left AVG on to try both as you say but kept getting times when McAfee would just hang and sometime stop AVG from loading at boot.
got rid of McAfee after a year when the new version I bought, think it was version 6, didnt have the option to update manually and would connect whenever it felt like.
Found NOD via a recommendation and havent looked back. into my 4th year with it now( gets cheaper each year :)) and this is honestly the first problem ive had so that's why its a bit annoying as to hats causing this.
thanks Bob

Use this. http://www.pandasecurity.com/usa/homeusers/solutions/activescan/default.htm?track=80383
It's panda antivirus' active scan page. It will scan and remove viruses from your computer threw a webpage without having to install. The only drawback is that you need to run it in internet explorer because it requires a plugin to run. Get the scan started right before you go to bed because it will take hours to complete.

I think both of them will probably work in much the same way, so you now have a choice, Baz.
I have to say, this sounds very strange. Can I suggest that you try downloading a little program called EndItAll2 (http://www.docsdownloads.com/enditall-1.htm), which will attempt to close / kill any running programs, while in normal Windows mode? Also, have you tried going to Start > Run > (type) MSCONFIG, click OK, then look at the Startup tab to see what starting with Windows? You might find something iffy in there, but seeing as you can't even open HJT in safe mode, that's probably a bit of a shot in the dark.
Just a thought, but in Outlook Express > Tools > Options > Security (tab), there's a tick box that says "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened which could potentially be a virus". You haven't got that ticked, have you? If you have, untick it, and that could be your answer.
-
doesnt seem to be anything strange in the start up. I tried the outlook express one before but it didnt work. could I ask you a favour Simon and would you be able to send me the email again as I deleted it to try this option.
thanks
-
Yup, will do. :)
-
cheers Simon. It still failed :(
will hold onto the email this time in case I find a fix for it
Thanks
-
>:( >:( well its getting worse now. while trying again to open this email got a error message saying outlook express needs to shut down. it did. re opened it and I have lost all the emails in my inbox. The file is there in the store but it wont import or open.
does anyone know of any fix for dbx files or some way of repairing it.
-
Well, you could try reinstalling IE, which contains Outlook Express, or you could try downloading a different mail client, such as Thunderbird (http://en.www.mozilla.com/en/thunderbird/), to see if that will work, but unless anyone else has any brilliant ideas, it sounds to me like you may be fighting a losing battle, and the only way might be to back up everything you need, format and re-install Windows. It might sounds like a drama, but it will take a few hours, whereas you've already spent at least two days on this, and how much longer are you likely to spend trying this, that and everything else?
:dunno:
-
What version of windows are you running?
-
Hi Bob. I'm on xp with sp2 if that makes any difference
