Can anyone please tell me what a MSOCache file is?
It seems to be getting bigger and has lots of CAB zipped files in it and many other files Im thinking it has something to do with Windows but not sure
-
It's the installation files for Microsoft Office 2003, Kaz. It saves you having to insert the CD each time you want to make changes to the program.

Hi Simon,
do you know I was to tiered last night my brain just wouldn't function I woke up this morning and thought I know what the MSO is Microsoft Office! anyway I'm trying to have a spring clean with my computer it's full I was thinking of putting a new hard drive in and Sandra so helpfully found what kind of hard drive I have, but I have changed my mind looking at the right up on it I think I will just get an another external hard drive and put all my program's on there does that sound ok?
-
I think it would be better to put all your data (pics, music, vids, etc) on the external drive, and leave your programs where they are, otherwise you will have to reinstall everything. You can't just 'move' programs. :)
-
Thats what have done already! and still my hard drive is full Im trying to move stuff off my hard drive stuff that I dont use that often, but my music, movies, pics are always on an external hard drive
-
Oh and I think Iv forgotten to say although I have an 80g hard drive its in 2 partitions C drive 40gig D drive 40gig
-
I wouldn't like to advise you that most programs will run on an external drive, or that it's a particularly good idea. Some programs may require to be on the same drive as Windows, or if the external drive became disconnected while programs were running, this may also cause problems. You could probably get away with it with programs like Firefox, or a non-Windows mail client, such as Thunderbird, and games would probably be OK too, but I would be cautious with anything essential, Kaz.
-
I thought Id put the prog that I dont use that much on the external drive, and I understand what you are saying to me and I could put some prog on my D drive
-
If you have around 40 gig on your C drive that should be plenty for XP and all the programs that you want to run.
You need to make sure that you save everything such as IM received files, pictures, vids, music and documents eleswhere either to an external hard drive, D or to DVD.
-
Hi Sandra,
thanks for the input, but I do keep all my pics, music, movies on an external hard drive, all I have on my C drive are programmes I keep my D drive for backing upto, with some programmes running from the D drive
-
You must have a hell of a lot of programs to have filled up a 40Gb partition on your main drive, if I've understood correctly. Perhaps it's just a question of thinning out what you no longer use? I know this is what you've been saying, but wouldn't it be better to de-clutter, rather than just relocating it?
When I last formatted and re-installed Windows, I had hundreds of programs in my Start Menu and Quick Launch bar, but now I just have what I need, and I certainly haven't missed the rest. ;)
-
Do you think that might be what taking up unnecessary space I have gone into add and remove prog and gone down all my programmes wedded out what I don't need or don't use that often I have a very good reg cleaner tune up utilliites 2007 so that's set up to get ride of the crap etc. I also have got ride of all my temp files, but I must admit I do have some big prog on my computer.
I have just picked up a good little tip today and Iv tried it on my computers and it works, keep an eye out In Anti Virus I will just have to do a search to see if its already here f not Ill upload it to Tip, Tricks, tweaks it's quite good
Thanks again Guys & Gals

Well, the MSOffice files will take up quite a bit of space. It says in that link I posted above, how to remove them, I think. You don't really need them to be there, as long as you have your Office 2003 CD.
-
Iv got office 2007 will it be the same? I cant see a link Simon for removing them
-
Umm.... er... dunno. :dunno: It just said MSOCache was Office 2003, but there might be some other links on that page.
-
The file size of the 2003 version is about 270 megabytes, which, in the grand scheme of things, isn't a great deal.
-
Ah It could be something to do with the way 2007 works because when I save some stuff sometimes it says do you want to save it "Old Style" is the best way I can describe it so others who are still on 2003 can be compatible with 2007 if that makes any sence
-
I found this
Office 2007 users will not see the "Office Setup Files" in Disk Cleanup.
Unlike Office 2003 users, Office 2007 users cannot inadvertently delete the local installation source (i.e. MSOCache folder and contents) or remove it by using the Setup user interface or the Windows Disk Cleanup Wizard. If the MSOCache folder is deleted or corrupted, Setup automatically re-creates or repairs the folder the next time a source is required. If users do not have sufficient disk space, they are prompted to free some space. This way, Administrators can rely on the fact that every user has access to a source when they (the Admins.) distribute new updates or customizations.
I really don't care to have this space taken up just so I don't have to insert my installation CD when I maintain the applications or install service packs or patches, but I guess I'll just have to live with it.
-
Well, yes, if this is the case, it looks like Micro$oft has once again, in it's infinite wisdom, decided it knows best on how you should use your machine. ::)
-
You mentioned earlier about a lot of games I think.
Are you saving the Saved Games from a lot of big games ?
If so these will probably be saved in C\Program Files\ name of game etc.
That could be taking up your drive space.
If so you could change the folder where they save to onto your external drive.
If you really are using up so much space with just the installed OS and programs then I think you shoudl be replacing the hard drive with a much larger one as they are currently very cheap for lots of gigs :)
-
Hi Sandra,
I think there is a bit of confusion I don't use games, but my music, movies pics are on my external drive and I think I might look into getting my hard drive upgraded but I don't think I will be able to do it myself from the write up you found for me Ill ask my little computer man how much and let you know
-
Ok Hard Drive 350Gig £100 with fitting, is that good ?
-
Is that to also clone your old drive, i.e. reinstall Windows and all your programs on the new drive?
-
Yes I would still have to drives C & D would leave D drive with 40g on for backing up and then I would have C drive 280gig with everyhting transferred over the complete lot, so do you think that is good then?
-
Well, the drive would be round about £50, then the rest is for him to do the work. Not bad, really, considering everything would be done for you, and would presumably be guaranteed. If I didn't want to do it myself, I would be happy to pay that.
-
As Simon says hes charging around £50 for the work so why not go mad and get a 500 gig drive as it will probably only be an extra £15 or so, if you can afford that.
Must have been someone else I was getting confused with about games
-
A 500g hard drive wont probably work with the bios ect so my computer man says and could cause running problems and crashes I don't want that so ill just stick to 320g
-
I thought that the limitation was the 137 gig for IDE drives, never heard of any SATA drives having a limitation other than the 150mb or 300mb connection speed.
-
At least if you do as your computer man says, you will have someone to go back to if there are any problems. Although Sandra is probably correct, if you were to force him to install a larger drive, you risk him saying "I told you so", if anything goes wrong.
-
What he said was that probably when my computer was built it prob wasnt made to take a 500g drive and that if anything did go wrong it would unvalidate the warrenty but I have spken to Acer and they say no problem , but they dont do one thta big the biggest they do is 250g and wait for it it's £375 WOW
Im getting a 500gig now spok to computer man he says ok as long as Acer says its fine YIPPPYYYYYYYYYYYY
-
How much extra is it Kaz ?
I bet its not a lot more than the 350.
-
£10 extra so Im going for it
