The "world's largest Wi-Fi community" is to be created in the UK by a new plan to get us sharing our broadband.
BT and wireless hotspot operator FON have announced a scheme to get BT's Total Broadband customers opening up a secure channel on their wireless router, which other members of the community will be able to share.
In return, anyone who opens up their wireless router will be able to use FON's network of wireless hotspots, as well as the wireless networks of other BT Total Broadband customers for free.
Gavin Patterson of BT said: ?This is the start of something very exciting for BT. We are launching a people's network of Wi-Fi, which could one day cover every street in Britain.
?If they are prepared to securely share a little of their broadband, they can share the broadband at hundreds of thousands of FON and BT Openzone hotspots today, without paying a penny," continued Patterson.
There will be 500,000 members of the community at launch, whose wireless networks will be available to use for all community members, as well as 190,000 FON Wi-Fi hotspots around the country.

Surely sharing your connection with others will have an impact on your own quality of service, as it will increase contention? Have I missed something or is this just ludicrous?
-
If you've missed something, Simon, so have I. This is an absurd idea - "share a little of their broadband" indeed!

It's a brilliant idea for people having second homes where it would be used infrequently. ;)

"CommunityNet" is a better idea,
CommunityNet is an initiative of Adam Internet that allows AdamDirect customers on the same telephone exchange to share files between each other without counting towards any of their data quotas.
How does it work?
Since CommunityNet is only available between customers on the same telephone exchange*, data is transmitted directly between the customers connections at the exchange and not over the Internet. This allows for data transfers that don't count onto any of your existing data quotas.
How much does it cost?
FREE! All AdamDirect customers can enjoy the feature for no added cost.
What's in it for me?
Free and unlimited connectivity with your local community. Adam Internet provides a Forum for CommunityNet and a CommunityNet IRC Server which can be accessed once you have setup CommunityNet on your modem.
I share 10 Terabytes of files with 12 other people from the phone exchange, plenty of porn too
