Create a new user with the right name, Kaz, then copy across all the files you want to keep, then delete the redundant user.

I usually use brute force. :) Have you deleted the account associated with the folder. You won't be able to dump it till you do.

Login as an administrator, but not on the account you want to dump. Run Control Panel > User Accounts, and opt to delete the one you don't want from there.

That's a great tip I didn't know about!  I've reinstalled an OS before now, just to change the default user name.

Theres a simple fix in the registery :

Find the key:
Windows 98: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
Windows NT: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
Modify 'RegisteredOwner' and 'RegisteredOrganization' to become whatever you desire

For XP pro :

Click Start > Run and type REGEDIT

Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Microsoft > Windows NT > CurrentVersion

Right-click on RegisteredOwner and select Modify

Change the Value data: to your the new owner name

Right-click on RegisteredOrganization and select Modify

Change the Value data: to the new organization name

Reboot and you should be sorted.

I had to use it when I installed an OS for someone and used the wrong name

Hi Sandra, I have tried the REGEDIT and the spelling was wrong in the Reg Owner so I changed it rebooted, but it hasn't worked the file in  C:\Documents and Settings\Kan  :dunno: still says kan not kaz

What if I was to alter the Modify Binary Data? would that alter it

It has changed the name correctly in the column next to it under DATA it just hasn't altered the folder name

I cant understand that Kaz  :dunno:

Its a year or so since I last used it after finding it on a link to a MS info page, I think.

I will try and find something more about it later.

Cant find why its not worked but I have found an .exe that says it can do it.

http://www.dougknox.com/

Click on Win XP Utilities on the left and then click on Change Owner and Organization under Title.

Download and run the exe file.

Hopefully that will sort it out.

Creating a new user then deleting the old one should sort the folder out, Kaz.

I notice that file is dated 06/02/2002, so maybe something in the subsequent service packs have stopped it from working?   :-\
