Soooooo. The spellchecker on my Outlook Express is in French and therefore doesn't recognise any English words at all until I add them. ;D I thought it would be a simple fix via the options menu but there is no alternative language available. :help1:
-
Have you checked your regional settings in Control Panel?
-
Good point Rik. But they are set to English! :(
-
Where did this computer come from, Clive? Does it small of garlic and onions? :)x
But seriously, it seems that this is due to Office 2007 removing the English dictionaries from OE6. How helpful is that! The recommended solution is to download a third party spell checker for OE.

You've got to love Microsoft. Maintaining backward compatibility with the 8086 chip, but not with their own software. :icon_drowning:
-
That is incredible! Yes, I have Office 2007 installed so it all makes sense now. What a bunch of half wits they are! Thanks very much Simon. This forum has been worth its weight in gold since I changed computers! 8-)
-
It's what we do, Clive! :) Or try to! ;)
-
Unfortunately I can't find a compatible spell checker. Those that are available are for old versions of OE and promptly crash OE6. This is a real retrograde step isn't it? :o
-
If you have Office 2007 installed, why not use Outlook, or give Thunderbird a try?

Quand tu ecrit en francais il est tres bon n'est ce pas Clive ;D
-
Clive, I emailed you a spellchecker that works with OE6 :)
-
Personally, I use a dictionary. ;D

Personally, I use a dictionary. ;D
I would too, but i'm far too lazy :)
-
Je ne parle pas Francais Sandra! ;D
Thank very much for that Gmax. The spellchecker turned up but for some strange reason the attachment is greyed out.
-
Clive, try downloading it from here: http://www.iespell.com/
-
The problem was that the allow attachments box needed to be checked in OE so now it opens OK. However, it works fine for IE but it doesn't seem to work for Outlook Express.
-
at least it wasn't in bloody welsh!
-
Would that be rare, then, Sam? ;D

I'm using "Outlook Express 6", spell check is working fine, not sure why it wont work for you?, if you click on "create" do you see the spell check button?

Yes I do, but it's still in French. The iespell program downloaded OK but it doesn't seem to have integrated with OE. Not sure what I've done wrong! :bawl:
-
Clive, Try uninstalling the one i sent you & download the latest version from here: http://www.iespell.com/index.htm
-
Clive, Did you try going into tools- options- spelling, select language , in OE6 ?
-
Yes, I've uninstalled the original and unstalled the new one, but French is still the only option available under tools- options- spelling, select language. :dunno:
-
Hi Clive, did a google on this and found loads of same probs. most have tried a 3rd party spell checker as said here, some worked some didnt but also found this in a forum which might be worth trying.....it sounds like it might work too one of those obvious things you always never think of ;D ;D
....... install just the proofing tools from your previous version of Office (using the custom install option). You can get them from any older Office suite or application - including FrontPage, Publisher or standalone versions of Word, Excel, or Outlook.
To install just the proofing tools from Office 2003, run Office setup and choose the custom option. Uncheck all programs in the list and add a check to choose the options at the bottom of the programs list. No the nest screen, set each top level item to be Not Available (red X icon). Expand the Office Shared Features branch and locate Proofing tools in the list. Expand proofing tools and choose English, setting it to Run from my computer. Finish the installation.
Once installed, restart OE - go to Tools, Options and verify Spelling is configured to use the correct English dictionary.
-
Wow! I have a copy of Office 2000 so I will definitely have a go at that!
-
I'm getting nervous now! The custom install seems a bit vague to me and I don't want it overwriting my Office 2007 because I don't have the CD's for it. Have a look at this screenshot of my Office 2000 custom install ....

.. just make sure on your office installation that you have the English language dictionaries installed.
-
I decided that the little + boxes meant that I wanted to include the feature but by changing each section to a - then it wasn't included. I just left the tools/proofing checked and let it install. It took ages to install but I made a new filepath so it couldn't interfere with my Office 2007. When I clicked on Office 2007 it went through a configuration setup and came back with an error message saying the new feature was incompatible. However Office still worked fine. But when I went into OE6 the spellcheck is now in English!
Thanks guys for all your help on this. Brilliant work!!!

That's excellent, Clive, and full marks to Baz for finding it! If we used Karma that would be worth at least a couple! :thumb:
-
You would have thought that since MS screwed it up that they would have at least offered a fix. I'm very grateful to both Baz and Gmax for their help. :D
-
no probs pleased its sorted. got to admit I would never have thought of it myself. good old google :D
I was starting to think along the lines of 'is OE not compatable with a spell checker in Open Office' . Im giving Open Office a go this year after what people say about it its at least worth a try
dont start with the karma stuff though its really annoying ;D ;D ;D
people award it for daft things and it gets out of hand ;D
-
I have Open Office on my laptop, and although I can't say I've actually used it much, it seems perfectly compatible with M$ Office.
Don't worry, Baz, we won't be installing Karma. :)
-
phew!!!!!!!!!! no karma  ;D ;D ;D
yeah Ive had Open Office for a few months now but ,same as you Simon, I havent used it much. Must give it a go. Do you use any of the other progs that come with it Simon.
-
We tried Karma a few years ago but some of us ended up with such big negative scores that we had to buy wide screen monitors.
-
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
i really like open office, but make sure you have one of the version 2.x ones, the version 1 is ok but a bit featureless
-
yeah I have v2.3

Yes, it we ever used it again, we would have to remove the 'smite' option! ;D

Some of us got quite high postive scores from what I remember Clive :o:
-
Yes you did Sandra! ;D
