For some reason I can't get my new mobo ethernet to work, so I'm using it via USB atm, but it doesn't download no where near what it should be, and it's on "10mbs"?
-
what do you mean, "doesnt download no where near" - are talking speed or quantity?
-
Speed, i'm getting around 400k a sec, and i normally get 2300
-
And by saying the connection is on 10 i mean this.

Normally it's 100?

Anyonnnnnnne? :-\

Sorry, I'm not really sure what the question is. Are you saying that you're using a USB modem rather than a router? If so, you may well find that your line speed has dropped, and with it your profile. Can you extract some line stats?
If that's not what you're saying, could you explain exactly what you are doing?
-
That i'm connected via usb not ethernet, and my speeds gone right down
-
Connected to what, though?
-
ntl modem
-
Can you get line stats from that? The most likely cause of your speed issue is the modem, USB will support ADSL flat out.
-
The modem was fine on ethernet, usb is what killed the speed, what stats exactly?
-
Downstream sync speed, noise margin and attenuation. If you can, a BT speed test would also be handy: http://test.speedtester.bt.com:50301/
Could the modem be a USB 1.x device?
-
It's 2x. On statues it's saying 10 MBPS? it's normally 100 on Ethernet, is that whats causing it?
-
Sounds like its only a USB 1 modem.
That would limit it to 12mb max so 10mb would be about right.
Ethernet would give you 100mb.
Unless your internet connection is over 10mb you shouldnt notice any difference in downloading, surfing and emailing, only slower data transfers between any PCs that you have on your network but if you are using USB to your PC then I assume that you arent networked.
-
It's a USB 2 supported modem I'm sure as it's not old, and I'm on 20 meg :dunno:
-
if you have a 20mb connection then the max you will ever get with the usb mmodem connected is indeed 10mb. maybe we should see if we can help you get your new mobo's ethernet to work?
-
Well normally i plug it in, and it sorts it's self out :s, ethernet now i mean
-
ok - well when you plug in the ethernet do you get any signs of activity - i.e. does windows detect a network? Does the lights on the router show a connection?
-
I suppose it's entirely possible that the USB drivers don't support higher speeds. Have you asked NTL?
-
just install a pci network card if your onboard one is not working
-
I'm gonna pick a new NIC card soon, only explanation i can think of it that it reads the modem as USB one as you said :(
-
Even if the modem was USB 1.1 - you'd still be able to achieve a theoretical max of 10mbit, which is 1.25MB (1220K/s) (less overheads, cable loss etc, but certainly over 1000k/s).
