Title: USB Modem Compatibility
Post by: GillE on January 11, 2008, 01:22
I've hitherto used a BT105 Voyager USB modem which was supplied by my ISP, AOL.  However, my main computer has given up the ghost and I've had to get a new one, loaded with Vista.  Expect lots of questions from me :) !

Believe it or not, Vista won't connect to the internet through AOL's USB modem.  I checked AOL's help pages and found that their advice is... buy another modem.  I've been with AOL for 7 years so I wasn't happy.  Anyway, my hubby has a mobile phone from O2 and I found today that if I swap to their ISP I'll get a current customer discount.  This means unlimited downloads, up to 8 meg download speed and only £7.50 per month with a free Vista/XP router capable of supporting 3 computers.  That's opposed to AOLs modem which supports one XP computer at up to 2 meg download speed and costs £17.50 per month.

I guess the moral of the story is, don't upset loyal customers!

O2 own BeThere as well and their offer for someone with a mobile phone contract does seem to be quite good.
I have been with BeThere for a few months now and have been quite happy with their service, apart from their email server seems to have a mind of its own and fails to connect a few times every few days.
Its usually fine within an hour though.
As O2 use the same equipment as BeThere then you should be fine Gill  :)
