Title: How do I change the installation drive?
Post by: Kaz on February 06, 2008, 12:39
Hi everyone,
I am trying to install a exe file which I have downloded and I want to install it to My E drive, but it keeps installing it to my C drive which I don't want it is not giving me the option to choose which drive I install too, so is there another way I can install this to the drive of my choice please

If the installer is that bad-mannered, Kaz, I'd have doubts about using the program tbh.

It's UTorrent Rik,
it automatically updates, but I want to download a previous version and put it on a different drive  ':|

I'm not a torrent person, sorry, Kaz. :(

uTorrent doesn't actually install anywhere.  It runs from the .exe file, Kaz, so put the .exe file where you like, and create a short cut to it on your desktop.

Hi Simon,
well at the moment I have it installed in Programme files on my E drive where I installed it to you can choose where you want it to go, sorry but I have done this and now I want to install another version, but as you say it goes straight to my C Drive  :dunno:

Are you saying you want to update the version you already have, or want to completely reinstall it?  If you just want to update it, click Help > Check For Updates, and it will automatically update itself.  If you want to start again, just delete the uTorrent.exe file from wherever it is, and replace it with the newly downloaded version.

Ha yes this is where I have the problem when I install it this time it doesn't ask me where I would like to install it to and just as you say puts it well where ever it likes too I cant get it to install on my E drive it puts a short cut on my desktop, bu it doesn,t install to programme files so where Goes it go too? and I have 2 copies one on E drive and the other where ever? and I dont want to use the new updated version at the moment it's not too good and some sites have banned it! this version I have has an exe and then a installer with it if you download it off their web site it's just and exe file ':|

As I said, it doesn't install, Kaz, it runs direct from the .exe file, so whichever version you want to use, delete the other one, put the one you want where you want it, and create a desktop shortcut from there to run it.  :)

I'm only going by experience from my own set up, Kaz.  I haven't a clue what you did before, but check in your Add / Remove programs, and you shouldn't find uTorrent there, as it's not an installed program.  To put it where you want it, you just move the downloaded 'uTorrent.exe' to the location from where you want it to run, and for convenience, place a shortcut to it on your desktop.  I can't really explain it any clearer, as there's nothing else to explain!  :)

Sorry to disagree Simon, but the later versions of uTorrent do install, this has been the case for a few versions.

Ive just checked my installed progs and its shown there quite clearly.

  ;D

Well, it definitely isn't on mine, and I have the latest version, as it updated only the other day.

If that's the case, then I have to apologise, Kaz for giving you wrong information.

I'll get me coat...

Hi Simon

 My version is 1.7.7

Im not sure, but Ive got a feeling that there is an option to have either an installer when you download or just an exe file. Will check on site.

Cant see any info on site-as soon as you click downloads you dont get the option that I suspect you used to get.

Are you useing Vista Simon-maybe thats why?

Yes-Ive just checked FAQ in uTorrent, and in answer to the question "Does uTorrent install itself" it said

No, it is a stand-alone application, unless you use the installer version. However, on first run, it will ask if you would like to make shortcuts on your start menu and desktop.

 Im useing the installer version!

Well, that's something of a relief for me, in that it seems I may not be going senile just yet after all.   :P

Curiously, it shows on my Vista machine as installed, but not on my XP machine, which I was looking at, as I believe Kaz runs XP.

I must have originally used the 'no-installer' version, which updates as it is.  If the 'no-installer' option is no longer available, this is where the confusion lies.   ::)  Perhaps it's one of those programs which prefer to run off the 'C' drive, and give no option?

I must be running the installer version then  ::) some versions when you update don't have the installer version it's all clear now I wonder why some do and some don't oh well Ill stick to this version for now it's not banned on any forums where as 1.77 is and some other earlier versions had problems apparently 1.6.1 is ok

Why is 1.77 banned on some forums, Kaz?

utorrent.com only offers a standalone .exe for download. Sounds to me like you have downloaded it from somewhere else, and most likely has been packaged with an installer so it can install some nice toolbars etc (i.e. spyware).

Download the .exe from utorrent.com - http://download.utorrent.com/1.7.7/utorrent.exe

Hi Adz, and  :welcome:

That link, when run, actually gives the option to install the program, or run it from the .exe file.  :)

You're right, ooops

I ran it with uTorrent already running, just re-focused uTorrent so presumed it was still a standalone app as before. Quite a dinky little installer they've strapped on :)

RE: original question - just install it, and move the utorrent folder from c:\program files to wherever you want, and fix any shortcuts. it'll work as before
