Now..... I'm not sure where to start with this........ or if any of you can help
The problem is - xbox live keeps disconnecting when playing an online game.
I've been on the the isp (virgin) and xbox live - and activision - as i thought it was just call of duty 4 that was causing the problem, but its not, other games disconnect too. All of course blame each other.... I've searched the internet until i am blue in the face, and I really don't know the answer.
isp says that the connection is fine, the pc stays connected so the modem isn't at fault (they say)
xbox says that on their tests that the connection is fine.
activision were totally useless and couldn't really tell me anything apart from to set up port forwarding on the router which i don't have but I have put into the ics settings.
i have a wired ics cable connection, and this didn't happen before so why now? The xbox did have the "ring of death" and now its back fixed aparently ..... it seemed ok .....
The firmware is upto date on the modem (webstar 2100 rubbish i think ) even tho its from 2004 - the settings on the ics seem ok - and the xbox seems set up,
we can play for over an hour mostly - sometimes 10 mins.
i have tested the ping and once i lost 1 out of about 10 tests. mostly 100 percent correct.
not sure what else to say........ do we have any gamers out there?
any help would make me a happy bunny lol
please if you have any idea's ...... ask me anything........
I am tomorrow again going to try and start the xbox plugged into the modem but it didn't work before but maybe turning off the pc and the modem first might work......that might us something.
I need the xbox working so i can get on with my surfing and he is ok gaming hahha!

So, you've had no problems with your internet connection while using it for anything else, Michelle? Surfing and downloading all OK?
-
so let me get this straight, you have:
virgin connection -> modem -> router -> PC | Xbox ? and its all wired.
How long have you had the Xbox live subscription, as this just started happening with the new game? did call of duty 4 install any updates to play the game? how well do other games perform?
Call of Duty 4 seems to have been dogged with problems in the past, from what I recall, and its probably still an issue - the main issue was the number of people on the server - Microsoft underestimating how many people wanted to play it online.
Also are you sure your ports are setup on the router correctly?
Apart from the obvious network issues I'm not sure I can be of much help.

I seen this on another forum...
STM Statement:
As part of our continued efforts to improve our customer's broadband
experience we are continuing to trial measures which will more efficiently
and pro-actively manage network traffic.
As part of our continued efforts to improve our customer's broadband
experience, we are making changes to the current Traffic Management Policy
within certain trial regions.
This updated policy will be trialed within the following regions
Preston, Wigan, Blackpool, Camden, Dalston, Enfield and Haringey.
These measures are based on policies that detect traffic patterns
that are deemed potentially abnormal and apply traffic management rules to
ensure that other customers are not adversely affected by this traffic.
The trial aims to prevent or reduce the effects of a minority of
users abusing the network and preventing the majority of subscribers from
having the network performance they desire.
For the vast majority of customers, upwards of 95% of the base,
their experience will be a more consistent speed (both upload and download).
Those who have the policies applied to their connection will
experience their download / upload speed being constrained (less than 5%
affected). Breach of acceptable use policy may lead to these policies being
applied.
These optimisation policies are being trialed during the following
times where the potential for abnormal traffic has been identified as having
the greatest adverse impact on our customers' experience.
10am - 3pm Download only
4pm - 9pm Download
3pm - 8pm Upload
During these times the following thresholds will be applied for upstream and
downstream.
10am - 3pm Download
Size M: 900Mb
Size L: 2400Mb
Size XL: 6000Mb
4pm - 9pm Download
Size M: 450Mb
Size L:1200Mb
Size XL: 3000Mb
3pm - 8pm Upload
Size M: 200Mb
Size L: 700Mb
Size XL: 1400Mb
And these are set to go national VM sucky long time
There is a lot of replies to the post saying people all over are feeling they are being capped and looking to jump ship.
Maybe it's coz of capping shell.
Do you get the same problems after midnight?
-
but the bandwidth usage from the xbox is pretty low, so I doubt that, unless you are downloading as well.. then this could be an issue. I have to say I'm probably going to leave virgin once my 12 months at this house is out....
-
There's a lot of discontent with Virgin in general at the moment. Users seem to feel as though traffic is being strangled, and they have apparently introduced more traffic management recently. If the number who have migrated to IDNet is anything to go by, they are losing a lot of customers.
-
Okay right - first no there is no router.
set up is - xbox into pc via ethernet - pc into modem via usb - modem cable virgin.
if thats clear lol
I don't think its to do with capping it can happen at any time of day or night. Funny thing is I hadn't had any other problems with my connection apart from yesterday - when I couldn't get on line at all and i thought virgin were just doing some thing on the line so I left it a while til I called them (about 90mins) , they said there were no known issues in my area and suddenley it just started working again no problems. I had been downloading all day so that might have been capping of sort? But of late I've not downloaded much at all - hardly anything maybe a small game or two.
I've had virgin and xbox about 15months and no problems like this before - well only the xbox freezing and then the ring of death. This seems to be since the xbox came back after repair... but we only noticed it when playing multiplayer on COD4 which was a few months after the xbox came back.
Thought it was just that game - but then he tried playing PGR4 multiplayer and it happened there.
Another odd thing is - that it doesn't kick you out of the game but off xbox live and the pc is still connected and working fine. Most of the time you restart the xbox and you are right back on, and sometimes you don't even have to restart xbox you just go right back in.
The only thing I'm not sure is set up right is port forwarding as I can't find out how you port forward without a router, I've put then ports into the ics but I'm not sure I have done that right.
-
and thanks for looking guys :)
-
Not having used cable broadband, or Xbox, I'll be of no help, Michelle, so hopefully Sam will be back later. :)
-
Yeah I think possibly Sam is my only chance here :dunno:.........thanks anyway Simon :)
-
so what happens if you just / can you... straight into the modem.. or do you have a usb modem, but most virgin ones do have the option of ethernet as well...
i'm not convinced it actually sounds like capping.. another thing to do is see if you ip address changes when you get kicked off - I wonder if that is causing a problem, it shouldn't but just a thought.
-
yeah I can plug it right into the modem, I'm going to try that later, when I don't need to use the pc
yeah I wondered about an IP problem, so I made the one in the xbox a static one, although I did notice that it changed back to auto matic on its own once, I wonder how it did that, i should look again.
But........... then it would have been doing that the whole time.
How is it that I can check the ip addresses being used - if I go to start - run - ipconfig is it? or cmd and then something?
-
its okay I've got it thanks
-
No the ip address of the xbox is the one i put in and the one on the pc is the same one as it was last night so I'm assuming it stays the same. although I'll look when it gets kicked off.
My son has been playing for 2 1/2 hours and got kicked off just once after about an hour. It seems to be ok for an hour almost everytime at first.
-
i meant more the ip of the external connection more than the XBOX, if you aren't playing a game does the xbox stay connected for more than an hour at a time?
-
eh external connection? :dunno:
it only gets disconnected when in multiplayer or friends games.
-
oh i went on this website and it told me my external ip address ....... and its the one i have for my pc or modem yeah?
Its still the same. lol
-
yep, thats what I meant... hmmm, I just wondered if virgin were playing silly buggers. I don't know what it could be to be honest - it sounds like either virgin throttling or the microsoft server losing sync - can you update the x-box at all? is there a newer software version to be downloaded? The other thing is to try it with another game that isn't so heavily subscribed on the virgin side of thing.. also to see how it does at different times / without the computer on.... I just wonder if not having the PC in between might help.
-
ok well the good news is (or not)
Plugged the xbox directly into the Modem and Xbox live disconnected after 20mins! lol worse!
There's no newer software..
We did try an older game PGR3 which I don't know is on the same servers as PGR4? I guess so? But that Disconnected too.
-
Oh dear, not having much luck with this, are you Michelle. :dunno:
-
No been trying to sort it out for weeks lol stupid thing..... ::)
-
Well, it's Micro$oft, what did you expect? ;D
-
lmao yeah thanks for that :ack:
