How do you know when SP3 has downloaded I have Updates set to automatic so how will I know when or if I have already downloaded this? :dunno:
-
Go into Windows Updates via Start/All Programs and under Options on the left side of the screen you will see "Review Windows Updates". Click on it and it will tell you if you have installed it.
-
Right click on my computer and go to properties and it will tell you there also. If it says service pack 2 or below you don't have sp3 installed.
-
Do we know if SP3 is safe to download now?

I haven't got an Options in my All Programs?

Use Reno's method above. It's easier!
-
Just open My Documents, go to Help > About Windows and it will tell you there too. :)
-
Got it I'm still on SP2 oh well will have to wait I surpose thanks for the help again people ;)
-
You should be able to get it by visiting Windows Update, Kaz. :)
-
Think Ill wait till it comes around
-
You'll know you've got it when the computer stops working. ;D

:haha: It's not that bad, Dave, at least, it seems to work OK on mine. :)

Dave is correct. I've just carried out a Google search and the issues with SP3 have not been resolved. Some (like Simon) get away with it whereas others end up with a computer that re-boots itself in an endless loop. ::)

So you have it then Simon did it come in your updates or have you downloaded it from Microsoft?

Ah, I thought that only happened with a certain type of AMD machine, but as mine is Intel, I think I was fairly safe.

I used Windows Updates to get it, Kaz, but as Clive said, if you have an AMD machine, you may want to hold fire on it.
-
I also think it screws up it you use firewire or HP products.
-
What, tomato sauce?

Whats an AMD

It's the type of processor you have, Kaz. Right click My Computer > Properties > General (tab) should tell you.
-
AMD is an alternative processor to Intel. If you go into Control Panel/ System/System properties it will tell you which one you have.

Oh heck I have AMD Turion 64x2 Mobile is this going to ive me problems ?

Best to leave SP3 where it is Kaz. It's only an accumulative update pack with a few add-ons so you already have most of it anyway.

What will happen when it comes as an automatic update what should I do then?

It does seem as though the problems are isolated still further to HP computers, and there surely can't still be hundreds of thousands of users with AMD based machines continually rebooting, but I certainly wouldn't want to be the one to advise you to download SP3, Kaz, so as Clive said, it's probably best to leave well alone.

As far as I understand it, they've blocked WU from automatically downloading it, but I could be wrong there. I suppose, the safest option is to turn Automatic Updates off.

the safest option is to turn Automatic Updates off.
That seems to be the general concensus of opinion these days Kaz. I turned mine off because of the SP3 fiasco and I don't intend switching it back on again.
-
I would never update up to a service pack. Not after the fiasco moving from sp1 to sp2. It's like upgrading up to a different os. There are too many problems with having one installed over another. I always just reinstall using an updated installation cd. I was able to grab a copy of xp 9in1 sp3 about 2 months ago. That's the only reason i'm running it now. Btw I'm running an amd sempron 3000. I haven't had any real problems. At least none I thought were caused by the install.
-
Right I have turned off automatic updates now
-
I've now plucked up the courage to download SP3 on both computers. So far so good. :nerves:
-
There shouldn't be any problem now, Clive. :)

I have downloaded SP3 on my Desktop PC and all is fine been running it a while now with no problems, so Iv also downloaded it too my laptop and that's been fine as well fingers crossed must be lucky for a change
