Title: PC Anywhere
Post by: Gemini on March 26, 2003, 18:34
Has anyone had any experience or knowledge of using PC Anywhere by Symantec?  I just had a brainwave today (I do so occasionally ;)) and thought it might be useful for my home machine to access my office machine.  Means I'll have to be there even less  ;D

I used pcAnywhere quite a bit until Windows 2000 and XP came along with Terminal Server/Remote Desktop 8)

What do you need to know Gemini ?

Oh you've thrown me now Adept, I heard that Remote desktop wasn't as secure or as good as using PC Anywhere and up till now I hadn't really bothered.  It was just the thought of being busier workwise these days that I could limit some of my travelling.  Is Remote Desktop easy to set up and use?

Remote Desktop is as secure as any Microsoft product Gemini. Just keep up with the security patches ;)

Actually, you shouldn't actually remote desktop directly onto your PC. It's better to set up a Virtual Private Network and use that to run Remote Desktop. Is that a little too complicated for you? ;)

As for Remote Desktop being as good as pcAnywhere; I would say the RD is much faster :)

Ahhh now you're getting complicated Adept  ;)  I was thinking of something simple just to access the work machine :)  Anything too complicated would be easier just to drive to the office  8)

The other aspect to remember is that pcAnywhere works with an ordinary modem, whereas Remote Desktop really needs a fast Internet connection such as ISDN/ADSL. It also helps to have an "always on" connection to the Net.

Maybe pcAnywhere is better for your needs Gem :)

You're quite right Adept, no chance of a faster modem here, I'll have to stick to pc anywhere anyway.  I joined a local pressure group for broadband in the dales, hope I don't have to go on marches and things lol.
