Title: Phishers attack Google Calendar
Post by: Clive on December 30, 2008, 18:31
Emails sent to Google Calendar users tell them that their account will be deleted if they don't submit their Google username, password and date of birth.

This scam is hard to detect because, unlike many phishing emails, it includes your real name and email address.

The criminals have exploited Google's technique of inserting the real name of the recipient in email invitations, making the email seem plausible.

Clicking the link in the email takes you to an event in your Google Calendar that appears to be real, and to which several other people have been invited.

However, several spelling errors and anomalies in the email should alert you to its inauthenticity.

The email comes from Google's 'Customer Varifaction' department and is sent from the unlikely-sounding email address 'customerserviceXXXX@gmail.com' - with XXXX being a four-digit number.

Part of the email reads: "This Email is from Gmail Customer Care and we are sending it to every Gmail Email User Accounts Owner for safety. we are having congestions due to the anonymous registration of Gmail accounts so we are shutting down some Gmail accounts and your account was among those to be deleted. We are sending you this email so that you can verify and let us know if you still want to use this account."
