Mankind doesn't seem to be happy unless there is a worry about some great immeasurable unknown.  I remember global cooling, then Y2K, and now global warming.  I suspect there would be a lot more concern about meteorite impact if mathematicians were not able to roughly evaluate the chances of a cataclysmic event occurring.
