Without requesting it, my Outlook Express has started downloading my e-mails all by itself. I always like to view my mail on the server so I can delete anything I don't need. I also believe (possibly mistakenly) that e-mails viewed on the server are less likely to infect my computer with a virus. Does anyone know how I can stop OE doing this? :dunno:

If you look under Tools then Options there shoud be a setting for how often to do Send/Receive.
Increase the time or tell it not to do it :)

Thanks very much Sandra! :D

theres also in the same section a 'Send and receive messages at start up' tick box.
on a slightly different note but still with OE when I open it and check for new messages it is taking ages to check the server, just hangs for about a minute or so
-
Is this on first opening it, Baz? I find the full Outlook can do that, while subsequent checks are instantaneous (I have it checking every 5 minutes).

it is Rik. at first I thought it may be server related or something, not knowing anything about this you understand, as what I tend to do is boot up PC when its ready the first thing I do is open OE and check for new. Its here when it takes ages as you say any more after that are quick

I experience a delay too but that's caused by my antivirus software checking before it allows the download.

You can switch that off, if it's a nuisance, Clive, especially if you manage spam another way. If you switch off the Anti Spam, it will still check for viruses, but won't scan each message for spam triggers, which is what causes the delay.

That's a good tip Simon. I will do that! :)
