This object can be seen through a modest size amateur telescope - although merely as a faint smudge of light.  I've seen it and I'm sure you must have too Sam.

oooh thinking about it I might have, but I'd have assumed it was some optical illusion or poor resolution than an actual physical feature of the galaxy

No I just meant the galaxy itself.  You can spot most of the members of that cluster using an 8" telescope.

ah yes... I see what you mean now - I think I've seen most of that cluster - but I'm mostly a CCD person...
