Title: Vista SP2
Post by: Lona on February 08, 2010, 22:51
I installed vista SP2 tonight on my Desktop

After rebooting I cannot connect to the internet.  All other pcs  are connected but when I go into my LAN it says "unidentified network"

I then thought I would use my wireless connection but when I tried to connect it said somebody is using the same ip address.

Now when I check my network it says "Multiple Networks"

I've tried to rename the network to the name I gave it when I set it up but it won't let me type anything

Is the router seeing the PC when connected by Ethernet cable, Lona?

I'm not sure Simon, all I can tell you is the other 3 pcs have a connection.  I did pull the router out and left it for a few minutes and plugged it back in.

I've uninstalled sp2 and all is back to normal.  I think I'll do without sp2.

Rik is your expert here, but if you log into the router interface (you'll have to tell us what it is if you need to know how), it should tekk you if it's connected to the computer.  Then you'll know if it's connected but just not to the Internet, or not connected at all.

SP2 shouldnt cause a problem as I have it installed on mine and other Vista PCs with non of the problems that you are having Lona.

If you decide to install it again and have the same problem then I suggest going into the networks settings part and telling it to reset the network adaptor, that should resolve any IP address issues.

firewall software incompatibility with SP2?

I think you could be right there, Sam.  I installed sp2 on my son's laptop and it was fine.  I have AVG so that could have been the culprit.

AVG seems to be a culprit in lots of things recently.

That's why I've dumped AVG on all my computers.  Sadly it's had its day and now seems to have turned into a bit of a menace.   :(

Avast is very good Lona.  It's much less intrusive than AVG and a voice tells you "virus database updated".  It found a couple of viruses during the year I had it installed although one was a false positive.   :gofor: Lona.
