Title: A different slant on a speedtester
Post by: Rik on March 11, 2010, 16:54
Want to find out how others in your area are doing for speed? Then try:

http://www.top10-broadband.co.uk/speedtest/

It will test your speed, then show you the speeds achieved by others around you. Quite fascinating...

Very useful!

Very irritating, there's someone down the road getting 21Mb, compared to my 3.7. I'm trying to work out how...

Hmm, not too bad.  I am on Tiscai, or TalkTalk as it is now.  Download speed of 5.6mb/s.  Second only to Virgin at the Chorley Exchange.

You should move to Milton Keynes.

No thanks, Rik.  I'd rather eat cow sh1t than live in Milton Keynes, even though I would probably break all my teeth on the Concrete.   ;D

Mind you, I could easily live in Stoney Stratford.  :)

Mine was the slowest in the area, but the others were all LLU.

Don't feel deprived, one day you'll have FTTC.  :o:

True.  :sigh:  I guess I could go LLU.  ;)

I suspect that, one day, we may be faced with that decision, though that still leaves the final mile.

Yesterday I had a mere 104kbs, today it's a staggering 6.3Mb.  I've got into the habit of turning my router off overnight to ensure I still have a connection the following morning.   :D
Title: Re: A different slant on a speedtester
Post by: Simon on March 12, 2010, 14:24
Very strange, Clive.  At least, if you resync in the mornings, you have a better chance of a higher speed.

Post by: Clive on March 12, 2010, 15:22
Last week there was no connection until around 9 am but then I started turning the router off each night as an experiment and the connection stayed live, albeit painfully slow.  This morning around midday it resynched so I shall watch to see what happens.   :)

You need to do a BT test to establish your profile, though, Clive.

It has never worked since I switched providers.   :dunno:

It's been given a facelift lately, Clive, give it a whirl.

It says "checking user details" and decides it doesn't like me!
Title: Re: A different slant on a speedtester

At what point, after you've entered the phone number, or on the second screen?
Title: Re: A different slant on a speedtester
Post by: Clive on March 13, 2010, 10:36
It won't go past checking user details.
Title: Re: A different slant on a speedtester
Post by: Rik on March 13, 2010, 10:37
So just the phone number? Are you putting a space in?

No

Have a word with support, maybe there's an incorrect entry for you in the BT database.

I already did but it wasn't very helpful because they didn't know.  But I can't use it on my Plusnet account either.   :dunno:

You're not entering a service ID are you, Clive?

Noooooo!   ;D  I've used the site thousands of times in the past.   ::)  I'm beginning to suspect it may be something to do with a Java update since it claims I need to run an older version.  Let me try again using Plusnet.

I'm running the latest Java, Clive, which browser are you currently using?

Clive uses the wonderful Avant!  ;)

Still!  :o Clive, that's not an approved browser for the site, try IE or Firefox.

No, down the flat I use Firefox.  I wasn't able to try the speedtest again because we had a visitor and I'm now back home for the evening.
