Title: Understanding the Bacterium that Causes Syphilis

An article published in this week’s Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences goes a long way toward improving understanding of the bacterium that causes syphilis and may lead to novel therapeutic approaches for the disease.

Apparently Facebook has caused a surge in the number of cases of syphilis, quite odd when you think about it.

Yes, you can catch syphilis from Facebook.  LINK (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/facebook/7508945/Facebook-linked-to-rise-in-syphilis.html)  Nasty little blighters aren't they?   :ack:

Undoubtedly, Sam, but why would that then lead to a surge in just one STI? For that matter, when I was young, the two we worried about were syphilis and gonorrhoea, yet chlamydia existed at that time - no-one seemed to catch it, though. STIs are an interesting area of social change.

chlamydia is given a lot more press these days and its easily detectable - people have tests for these quite often. At UoB at the start of each year the NHS gave out test packs for this.

These are very 'non-specific’ symptoms and can be caused by other infections and diseases. If you go to a GP or family planning doctor with these symptoms, make sure you have a chlamydia test. You are entitled to ask for the test if you aren't offered it.

In men, chlamydia is the most common cause of discharge from the penis. Sometimes chlamydia can cause mild irritation at the tip of the penis (urethra) that disappears after two or three days.

I once went to one with a friend to give her moral support. She was very embarrassed and nervously walked in while I went in quite nonchalantly. She asked me how I could be so calm, I said it was probably because it wasnt me that was being treated  ;D

You'd probably be amazed at how much society has changed in 40-50 years, Sam. As youngsters, Clive and I were living in the tail end of Victorian society, despite the fact she'd been dead 60 years.

Mostly, I'd agree. My grandfather died of pneumonia in 1951. He was in a huge oxygen tent (they hadn't invented masks then) and there was little other treatment they could give. Last year, it was a simple course of a couple of tablets and a lightweight mask for me.

Nor as many murderers, rapists, paedophiles and illegal immigrants either Clive. We also had more freedoms to do what we wanted, where and when we wanted, without the nanny state banning, fining or taxing us.  :(

exactly, the press really makes you feel as if everything is right next to you and always about to happen to you if you aren't vigilant.

well I bet the average mcdonalds has more nutrition in it than what the masses were getting "back in the day"

Facebook and Twitter - just because ya don't see the point doesn't mean its bad. I see them as kinda pointless in the grand scheme of things but why not have a bit of fun. Facebook is great for keeping in touch with friends, especially when you live on the other side of the planet.

We had TV, radio and newspapers even back in the 60s and 70s Simon  :o:

Murders were front page news for days on end as we didnt get that many when we had capital punishment. I dnont remember hearing about paedophiles in the 60s and 70s so maybe they abducted and killed all the children back then as we just had people like Myra Hindley and Ian Brady on trial for murder.
The increase in paedophiles must be as a result of easier and shorter prison sentences since the 70s, much as is the case for murderers.
Title: Re: Understanding the Bacterium that Causes Syphilis
Post by: Simon on April 20, 2010, 08:07
If there has been an increase in paedophiles, some of it may be to do with the internet, but I still think a lot went on during the 60s and 70s which was brushed under the carpet, because families didn't want the 'shame' of admitting there had been problems, especially if, as in a lot of cases of abuse, it happened within the family.

Swerving uncharacteristically close to going back on topic:

As one of the less enjoyable rewards of playing in bands in the 70's, I one day found myself back in the local clap clinic yet again (I can still remember my Patient Number, even now), after the pills they'd given during my previous visit caused an intense rash which covered only the lower half of my body from the waist down.

It didn't take very long at all for the novelty of having a two-tone birthday suit to wear off - particularly once the itching began.  However, the clinic's interest seemed to lie, not with my discomfort, but in the fact that an allergic reaction to those particular pills was hitherto quite unheard of.  Consequently, I was asked to hang around while a photographer travelled the 30-odd miles from Southampton hospital to take pictures of me doing a twirl with my kit off.  Then, once that was done, asked if I wouldn't mind signing a disclaimer allowing the shots to be used for a feature in the Lancet.

Well, I've often thought I'd make a good centrefold.  After all, if Burt Reynolds can do it...  Any road up, somewhere out there is a medical journal with a picture of me doing a brilliant impression of a Strawberry Sundae and if you should still happen to have a copy in that box of questionable magazines you keep under the bed, I'll give you twice what you paid for it.
