I think FireFox has become overblown with bells and whistles, and needs to strip back to it's roots, as a straightforward browser, like SeaMonkey is now.

no matter what neither firefox or seamonkey will keep up with chrome... well not without a re-write that allows it to do multi-threading and take advantage of multiple cores.
