Title: Which email program?
Post by: chorleydave on April 30, 2003, 15:00
Hi everyone.

As virus/trojan writers tend to exploit the weaknesses in Microsoft products, and in  spite of the fact that I keep my AVG anti-virus bang up to date, I am thinking of uninstalling Outlook Express and using an alternative e-mail client.  I am looking for one which is

1) Free.

2) Supports multiple identities.

3) Will allow me to import all my Outlook Express settings, folders, identities, messages etc. before I uninstall.

4) Is fairly basic, with few frills, as I am not into flowery e-mails.

Has anyone any suggestions?

Thanks.

I use incredimail, Chorleydave. It has frills but you don't have to use them. It imports all your files from outlook and you then make it your default email package.  I love it, but then I like frills, the more the merryier :niceday:

Yeah, I occasionally use Incredimail too, but unless you *buy* (cough) the Premium version, you'll get ads, and a footer tagged to your outgoing mail.

If you could use the Netscape mail client, without the browser, I'd recommend that, but you can't, and I wouldn't recommend Netscape over IE at the moment.

Have you tried Eudora?  It can be basic, but has lots of features if you want to use them, and you can Import your OE stuff easily.  It's not free though, so you'll have to put up with an ad box, unless you (cough) *buy* the full version.

Pegesus Mail is free, I believe, and has a reasonable reputation, but I've never used it myself.

Have a look here (http://download.com.com/3150-2367-0.html?tag=dir) for a few options, Dave.

Thanks.  Pegasus looks promising, so I'm giving it a try.

Although Firetrust Benign (http://www.firetrust.com/products/benign/) isn't an e-mail client, I personally regard it to be an essential accessory, and urge you to consider using it alongside whichever client you eventually choose.

Thanks Rodders.  I'll definitely take a look at that now I am back with Outlook Express!

I don't know why I bother!  Must be paranoia!  I downloaded (first) Pegasus and (secondly) Eudora, but as soon as I opened them and took one look at the interface, I uninstalled them.  Too many buttons for my liking.  I've done this with other software so many times, I think it's time to stop.  I've tried alternative operating systems and within a day formatted my HD and gone back to Windows, Lotus Smartsuite and within a day gone back to MS Office, Netscape and never used it.  In fact, the only alternative I have ever stuck with has been the Opera browser.  I think I'd rather be slightly more at risk but, at the same time, feel comfortable with my machine.  No matter what I personally think of Bill and his monster, you can't beat  his products.

Anyway, I've spent so much time faffing around, I'm behind now, so I'd better open Outlook Express and get my e-mails done!

Thanks again.
