If the idea of using Linux in your business is one that makes you nervous, chances are you've fallen prey to one or more of the many myths out there that are frequently disseminated by competing vendors such as Microsoft. After all, each Linux user means one less sale for such companies, so they have a powerful motivation to spread such FUD.

I see a lot of truth about Linux in that article but also some BS
Suse and Fedora and their spin offs are still difficult for a new user
They have many programs that have to be found and manually installed
I have found Ubuntu and especially some of the spin off such as Linux Mint and ultimated edition are much easier to get programs and get them installed
As far as stability they all beat windows or macs by a long shot
-
I think Fedora has taken great steps forward and really isn't far off Ubuntu for ease of using, it has all the same basic tools... still I do prefer Ubuntu, but I don't really mind much eitherway.
-
I agree about Fedora but it still has a ways to go for newbie use
A Debian package from off site is still much easier to install on an ubuntu derivitive
Than an off site RPM for Fedora and especially Suse
Here lately I have tried both of their updated distros and they are just a bit harder to find things
The one a newbie really needs to stay away from is PClinux
I found it to be confusing and just difficult to install packages and so many programs most like are off site downloads
As far as use I found Linux Mint and Ultimate Edition Linux to be the easiest for a newbie with most programs a user would use include
For watching movies and listening to music
Which is some of the first things a newbie checks out as soon as he gets to Linux
-
the beauty of all of these linux distro's is out of the box most of the time everything the average user could want is there... and the graphical package manager is so easy to use.
-
I have to agree with that and its free lol
If Linux would figure how to run the more complicated games on Linux then it would be perfect
And more windows programs would work with Linux
the last big trojan I got a few months back I got very upset with windows
So I switched to linux and to tell the truth now I wouldnt run anything else
-
what games you referring to, I spend quite a bit of my time getting any windows game I get to work on linux. Still I tend to avoid ones with heavy graphics, but with a combination of wine and play on linux I normally get most things working well. I'm probably going to have fun getting Civ 5 running this weekend... either that or I'll install a VM

It's been released?
:woot:
I need a review, I need a review!
;D
Still no progress on a linux distro which provides effective TV card support?
-
I've not been looking for TV card support, but I've not noticed any in passing, I bet though its so low on priority given that I reckon most linux users are all about online streaming...
Civ5 - unsure about the UK came out here 2 days ago - I'm going to get it on my way home from work tonight.
Couple of reviews:

Will post my comments when I get it.

For TV card support you might try this one it seems to support a lot
Go for the 2.7 the 2.8 is still a little bugy

I'm downloading 2.7 now and will burn it to DVD :) . If I can operate the TV card from a live DVD, there may be a convert to Linux!
-
Good luck, Gill!

Be sure to use ultramix and ubuntu tweak they contain a lot of codes and drivers
Both ate located in Applications--system tools

I went shopping this evening and the supermarket had the new Civ5. Of course, I succumbed to temptation o:) .
-
We won't see you for a while then, Gill. ;)
-
Civ5 installed but won't play. Ultimate Edition downloaded and checked but won't write to DVD.
I'm not having a good time :( .
-
Gille does it give an error??
UE 2.7 is an image download all it needs it to be burnt to a DVD
Wont have to burn it as a bootable DVD
If the MD-5 shows good that may be the problem
I burn mine at the slowest possible speed and just burn it as an image

Sorry I missed your post Sam
I dont have a problem with heavy graphic games its the ones that are designed to run on windows most have a problem with these especially the more complicated and fast paced ones
-
I see what you are saying Davy.
Gill, I'm assuming you tried to run it in Windows? I just got my copy on the way home from drinks in the pub after work (went to electronic boutique, that took me back about a decade as they have been dead in the UK for quite some time). I haven't give it a go yet... but will probably in the morning now, involves booting into Vista for now... will try and get it working in Ubuntu later. Did you get to the steam initialisation bit?
-
I switched the computer on this morning and there's a splash screen from Steam telling me to log on to my account! So I've logged on and the computer is now downloading the game over the internet. This is bizarre - it's DRM gone mad and makes me concerned for my computer's intergrity.
Yes, Sam, I'm using Vista. Can't seem to get Ultimate Edition to write to DVD - I reckon it's a hardware issue at my end.
-
Strange Gille
You might look on ubuntu forums for the answer thats one of the good things about this distro all ubuntu fixes work on it

Unsure why it is downloading it.. but Steam is a common tool, lots of my friends who are proper computing geeks use it and think its fine - so I a wouldnt worry.

though I agree over the top drm... its not like you didnt just buy the game or anything :sigh:
