Title: Annoying Outlook Express
Post by: Big_Boss on May 01, 2003, 16:26
Hi,

Ive got a small problem with Outlook Express and Windows Messenger. Every time i start Outlook Express 6, without, fail, windows messenger starts also, ive had a look in the options and there is a ticky box to disable it. I tried unticking it, but it still pops up  ???

Im sure there is a proggie out there to stop this, there usually is for most annoying things  ;D

Thanks in advance,

Boss

If you are on XP (as I think you must be BB as you have windows messenger not msn one),I think its tied in with it.
I had the same thing and also found that it cluttered my address book on OE as well with all my hotmail contacts addresses and whether they were on line or not.
I eventually removed windows messenger  4.7 and installed msn messenger ver 5 and all is fine once again  :-*

Yeah i'd have no problem uninstalling messenger 4.7 but sometimes i use a program called GameVoice for in-game chat, and it wont work with MSN 5, not sure why.

I know there is definitely a tool to disable it out there. I remember someone writing into Computeractive about it. Cant remember what the answer was though and i cant find anything on google.  :-[

As i said before, i unticked the box in options as it states on that page:

RESOLUTION
To prevent Windows Messenger from signing on when you start Outlook Express:
In Outlook Express, click Options on the Tools menu.
On the General tab, click to clear the Automatically log on to Windows Messenger check box.
Click OK.

This however doesnt seem to work  :(

Ill try re-enabling it and disabling it, see if that helps.

EDIT: I also havent removed access to it as it says, as i need the program.

If you open Windows Messenger, go to Tools > Options > Preferences, then untick the box that says 'Start with Windows' (or similar), that might help.  Then open Outlook Express, and go to Tools > Options, and in the General tab, untick the box that says 'Automatically start Windows Messenger'.  That should do it, BB.   :)

Afraid not Simon  :-[ I opened winows messenger and went into options, that box is already unticked. The one is OE is also.

This has got me stumped  ::) or windows could be up to its old tricks again...

Fixed it!!  ;D ;D ;D

Found this (http://www.tek-tips.com/gviewthread.cfm/lev2/67/lev3/72/pid/605/qid/535381) site, via a second searching of google

Created the new registry value and voila, no more windows messenger  :D

Thanks for all the advice though  :)

That's a useful looking site BB.  I've added it to my Bookmarks as it might come in useful at times.

Glad you sorted your problem.  :)

Cheers.

Now here is something interesting...

Of course the same "problem" occurred with myself - WINDOWS messenger comes up, even tho I use MSN Messenger.

Now, I hadn't really looked at this, but here we go:

On one of my home machines, Wmessenger STOPPED appearing. Mmessenger stays as it should. Well, I didn't bother about this.

After reading this thread, and KNOWING that my work PC is the same as this thread - I thought I would do some registry hacking. Well, lets start OE first.

Erm - it didn't load Wmessenger this time!!

So: If you close Wmessenger so many times when OE is running (and you may have to have Mmessenger running too), then it just stops appearing, as if it knows LOL  :D

Don't think its my magic touch - but computers do FLAKE when I go near them (uh - oh)...

Actually, I think XP does have some sort of 'learning' capability.  If you perform the same tasks in the same way enough times, it eventually gets the message and does it automatically for you.   :)
