Both of my W7 (32-bit, Home Premium) boxes appear to have survived the SP1 installation unscathed.  Mind you, knowing Microsoft's record for blithely hosing its users' machines, I did trial it on the least valuable box first.  I'm wondering whether the glitch only occurs with certain flavours of W7.   :-\

Dimly believing that the useless shower of incompetent cretins at Microsoft would have fixed this well-documented problem long before now, I decided to let Windows Updates loose on my newly-acquired Win7 (Ultimate) x64 Dell laptop, today.  Guess what?  It got hosed - big time.  Exactly the same error that users have been reporting since SP1 was first released.

My one wish in life now is to vivisect that wretch Gates and any of his employees stupid enough to get in the way.

That's disgraceful!  I've not yet downloaded it to my laptop so I will continue to hold off.  There is a Microsoft article about it HERE (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2505743) but it's a bit late after the event.  Can you do a system restore Rod?

I can't install the service pack whatever I try. Here's what I did:

i. I searched for Windows Update, but couldn't find it.
ii. I downloaded the service pack and tried to install it from a command line but got an error saying that it couldn't run.
iii. I found it in the file manager and double clicked it, but just got a box asking what I wanted to open it with.
iv. I opened the SP in an archive manager and unpacked it, then tried each of the above steps on the unpacked archive, with similar results :(

I guess it just won't work on Linux Debian.  :-\

Where I went wrong was to allow SP1 to get chucked in with all the other updates being fired at me.  Apparently what causes the problem is SP1 trying to patch stuff that's already in the process of being updated by 'normal' patches.  Obviously when MS write code they don't take dependencies into account, or even get the routine to make the most basic of checks.

The Laptop is now stuck in a start-up loop until I have time to play with it again.  So instead of SP1 rolling back to a last good OS after completely arseing-up the installation, it simply goes through the whole routine again until the user gets fed up and decides to end it all.

Actually, I'll be following the steps detailed [ here (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;975484) ].  Pray for me?

Actually Debian did have an update problem

But it was much easier to fix

open a terminal and type

sudo apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade

Noooooo - I never do that on account of it upgrades xorg which kills X for me, and there's no way back from that (unless you happen to have a clonezilla backup sat on a separate HD - phew!). I'm rather selective about which updates I let in now. Kernels I take care of myself, and xorg I don't do.

I run nividia cards  so dont have a problem with  Xorg

If I do I just delete xorg at bootup and build once in

After having fixed my laptop the hard way, it was heart-warming to note that Microflaccid finally got round to fending this muck-up with yesterday's round of patches.  Way to go.  (https://www.pc-pals.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv300%2FMothballs%2FSmileys%2Fjerkit2.gif&hash=2eeb831f477ad0f198976c8b3717678dc43d1c54)
