Title: Couple of papers...
Post by: sam on June 30, 2011, 13:06
This is really one for Clive, but thought others might be interested (well in the first one, something todo with kids )... I've had two papers accepted recently (the first I probably already mentioned, but its now public)

Extrasolar Planets in the classroom: http://arxiv.org/abs/1103.5690 (published journal version: http://iopscience.iop.org/0031-9120/46/4/004)

Detection Thresholds and Bias Correction in Polarized Intensity: http://arxiv.org/abs/1106.5362 - this one tells people how to actually find sources :-)

Yes, many congratulations Sam.  It's not at all easy to get papers published with the stringent peer review put in place by the universities.  And Cornell is Ivy League!  Will I be able to access the full papers through Simbad?

I'd have thought so, but the full papers should be available from the arxiv link abliet in the preprint version.

Thanks Sam.  You sent me a copy of the extrasolar preprint some rime ago and I printed it out to read.  The second paper is way beyond my level of understanding!

well I'd talk more about cosmic magnetism and developments with the world's largest telescope.

It has been a while since I've been over to you lot.

I've booked up until September 2012 Sam - apart from March 2012 but I will be away for that date so I won't be able to collect you from the station or put you up in the flat.

look at you go! That's pretty good planning.... well we will have to look at autumn 2012 then. By then we should have some SKA pathfinder results to talk about :-)  I was actually hoping someone might invite me to give a talk at the FAS convention, but alas no.

You should have dropped a massive hint to whoever is organising the meeting Sam.  When I was meetings organiser I would have given my eye teeth to have had a volunteer!

I did. Oh well. I made sure I'd volunteered if a backup was needed. Its not like I'm not across the road or anything. Pah.

Incidentally who is the Meetings Organiser these days?

Steve Williams - I think he joined the committee well after you left. Long time ago now eh?  Lots of the same faces though - you should check out the new events diary I unleashed yesterday

You are correct, I don't know him.  Which society does he belong to?  I received your mailing list yesterday.  For some reason I was never removed from the council members list, but they are always sent out to all members the following day anyway.

Oh I can remove you unless you like the gossip. Expect another one of me in a few days explaining how the new society diary is the dogs bollock

I don't mind one way or the other Sam.  But it must reminiscent of Victorian palaentologists discovering dinosaurs for the first time.
