Title: Open Office
Post by: Clive on August 04, 2011, 14:49
Is Open Office any good?  I'm setting up a new netbook for a family member and she wants a Word compatible software installed on it.

Yes. It's great and easier than the new word. I've been using open office and now libre office for years.

I've got it on my laptop, and find it perfectly OK to use, as long as you remember to save things in 'Word' formats, so other people can open them.

You can make that the default too.

Great thanks very much for that.  I've deleted the trial version of Norton's and installed Avira and also Chrome.  Now I'm downloading 77 Windows updates.   :D

I think it's antivirus software from Avant.   ;D  Anyway, Open Office successfully installed and all documents saved as Word 2007.  Hopefully the extra RAM will turn up tomorrow and I can present it to her as a working machine.   8-)

It's the same machine that I bought for myself.  I just hope I've sent for the correct RAM stick.  All I know is it's 2Gb and made by Kingston.  The photo looks right.

Perhaps it's been intercepted by rioters and is now being sold on eBay.

  I've wondered that too Gill.  I ordered it from Amazon and it was supposed to turn up on the 6th along with the netbook and case.  It was despatched separately by Royal Mail from Jersey whereas the other items were from UK mainland.  Both turned up early or on time.  I've contacted Amazon and they have asked me to wait until the 13th before contacting them again if I still haven't received it.  They have promised to resolve the issue.

It takes a couple of extra working days to arrive from Jersey, so may be with you tomorrow, Clive.
