Hi,
I recently upgraded my keyboard and mouse. The new keyboard is a Logitech Internet Navigator Special Edition Black and the mouse is a Microsoft Intellimouse optical silver edition. After installing the software for the above, my computer takes an age to shut down, around 2 minutes, which is obviously a lot of time. (Im on XP if it means anything) Only a few weeks ago i had edited a few setting in the registry to inprove shut down times. The tweak site is Here (http://www.tweaktown.com), and the guide Here (http://www.tweaktown.com/document.php?dType=guide&dId=324&dPage=9).
Im sure this hasnt caused the problem as the PC has been fine since and the shut down times have only increased after installing the new software.
Hope you can help ;D

My XP PC takes ages to power down too BB :(
I've probably been to the same sites as to to try and solve the problem to no avail - so I gave up ::)
What I did instead was change the control panel | power options | advanced | When I press the power button on my computer option to Standby.
Now my machine takes seconds to shut down and about 15-30 seconds to start up (Windows is usually at the login prompt before the screen lights up) :)
Who needs to power down? 8)

Maybe im being slow today, but doesnt that mean that your not acutally shutting down the PC at all, only putting it into standby? :-\

Yup, but it's the same effect on my PC - everything switches off - no lights, no fans, no sounds :)
It probably draws a trickle of current, but it's worth it to be able to switch on the PC so quickly.
-
Hmm ill give it a try and see how it goes.
Has anyone got any other suggestions on how to solve this? :)

Mins is the same. Takes a good 40 secs to shut down. I thought it was just one of those things with XP. Might have a look at those links though. ;)
-
40 seconds would be fast for me Simon - mine takes a good 2 minutes to shut down :(
-
Thats what is annoying me though. Its used to shut down in 10-20 secs and now it takes nearly 2 mins and i cant work out why.
I also tried that standby setting like you suggested Adept but all the fans i have are still on and so is the hard drive, so its really the same as having it on.
Its starting to frustrate me now.

Did it used to shut down in 10-20 seconds when you first had it BB? Mine did, but when I started loading it with programs and all the crap that accummulates, that's when it started to slow down.

It was fine last week, before i got my new keyboard and mouse, after installing the software for that, the shut down speed has increased dramatically.
Ill try disabling it before i shut down, see if that makes any difference.

That looks handy, but I couldn't get it to download. :( Will try again later. ;)

Do you see the "Closing Network Connections" message? Does it take a long time on that message, or is it after that?
If its on that message, check all network connections are running properly.
Sometimes when closing, the software does not close (in the background), it keeps trying until at some point it give the "not responding" message, which you might not see because its in the background.

It doesnt come up with any messages or anything, just sits there for about 2 minutes and then shuts down.
Ive also set settings in the registry to end non-responding tasks. ("AutoEndTasks 1"). Also "HungApptimeout 5000", which means it should wait 5 secs for it to close before ending it automatically.
Simon im thinking that setting might be applicable to you. You mentioned earlier that it takes 40 secs to shut down, and the default value of HungAppTimeOut is 40000 (or 40secs). You could try lowering it to say 5000 and see if it shuts down any quicker.

EDIT :Also WaitToKillTimeout is set to 4000 on mine. I think ive got all that right, you might want to refer to that guide above, as ive probably got bits slightly wrong.

If you cant get it to download, ive got it, so i can send you it if you want :)

I might say that there is a problem dumping memory out onto the harddisk then.
Have you noticed that HDD access seems to be slow(er than normal)?
Bit of a strange one... :-\
-
Hmm, i have noticed that the hard-drive seems to be slightly slower, not much tho ;)
I thought thats maybe what its doing, but i get no messages so i cant be sure.

Update
The tool from hookstar works a treat, or at least i think it has (i closed some of the background apps before trying it, so i dont know if it was definitely me or the program that shut it down quicker). Anyway it shut down very fast and i think the problem may be solved.
Thanks Hookstar :thanks:

Well, it seems that mine is actually quite quick compared to some others, but I'll certainly have a look at that setting. I think I've played with these before though, following tips from a PC magazine.

Got it now, thanks BB. Tried it and it works, but not really any quicker.

Oh well, its worth a try, and look on the bright side, it didnt make things any worse so thats got to be a good thing. ;D

One of the problems with XP is that the PC writes back to the hard drive at shutdown and some times refuses to close programs.
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\"
"PowerdownAfterShutdown"
Change numerical value from "0" to "1"
This edit automatically ends tasks and timeouts that prevent programs from shutting down and clears the Paging File on Exit
Remember!!! Make a backup of the registry before you make any changes and I would also advise creating a new System Restore Point before any changes.

**UPDATE**
Finally found out thats its the Logitech software that is causing my PC to take an age to shut down.
According to Logitech's support section:
"Current versions of iTouch software fail to unload while the system is shutting down, causing longer shut down times. This issue has been addressed in the next release of software, which is expected to be available shortly. Please check this document or the download page later for an update to the software. "
The page is however dated 4-3-2003, so im not hoping for the new release any time soon. Guess ill just have to put up with it for now.
Thanks for all the advice

Does this "Fix" from Lobo not address that issue and help it at all BB ???
