Posted this an another forum, thought you would like to discuss :o:
taken on my camera phone the bright light was going very fast against the wind so a chinese lantern is out of the question no noise as you can hear the church bells in the back ground, clouds were going in the opposite direction with the wind...and I had'nt had a drink  no ground to see as its a flat as a pancake round our neck of the woods...unexplainable ???

Navigation light from a plane, Terry?
-
Not a plane Rik...that night was very low cloud and not a hint of noise as you can hear the church bells in the back ground plus not port or starboard lights.
-
I've seen planes pass over here which have managed to only show the one light, Terry, and whose noise has not reached the ground - sound can do strange things if the atmospheric conditions are right. I'm just taking a stab in the dark, though.
-
My money is on Chinese Lantern Terry. I've seen them zip by at relativistic speeds when the wind catches them. The wind speed and direction at a height of a few hundred feet can be very different to that on the ground. 8-)

Clouds traveling east ..wind on ground heading east
PS what is relativistic :)

No one would have believed, in the first years of the 21st century that human affairs were being watched from the timeless worlds of space. No one could have dreamed that we were being scrutinized, as someone with a microscope studies creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. Few men even considered the possibility of life on other planets and yet, across the gulf of space, minds immeasurably superior to ours regarded this Earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely, they drew their plans against us...

Near light speed. :o:
