Title: The meteorology behind an unusual autumn
Post by: Clive on December 04, 2011, 19:21
As autumn 2011 draws to a close, the record books are set to show that it was much drier and milder than normal. BBC Weather's John Hammond takes an in-depth look at the meteorology behind this unusual season.

We've had drought warnings around here!  Wait till we're under 8 inches of snow!   ::)

That doesn't count, it's only .8" of rain. :)

Last night I had a ‘phone call from Nita, who’s been floating around the Caribbean with her sister for a couple of weeks.  Apparently the weather is better there.  It will be interesting to see how smug she is once she lands back in the UK at a ridiculously early hour on Friday morning wearing a cotton frock.   :snow:

Are you going to meet her, Rod? If so, you could be conveniently delayed and let the cold bite a bit.

At that time of day?  In Cardiff?  Are you insane?  No, I'm afraid I shall be trapped between an electric blanket and heavy duvet and quite unable to open my eyes for several hours.  Shame, really.  (https://www.pc-pals.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv300%2FMothballs%2FSmileys%2Fsnooze-1.gif&hash=a32db2160f0f4e2cb6eb95c94050408660bce9be)

I hope she's bringing back plenty of Caribbean rum to keep her warm.  I rather stupidly bought a bottle of strawberry liqueur which tasted lovely in the shop but had to be poured down the sink when I returned home.

I'm not surprised!  :ack:

I've asked her to bring me back a case of this stuff (http://www.ministryofrum.com/rumdetails.php?r=52).  However, she's got the memory of a Goldfish so I'll probably just get an annoying shirt instead.

Gosh that's strong stuff Rod!  I used to be quite partial to a bottle of Rhum Negrita which was particularly smooth compared to the more popular Captain Morgan.

I've only ever had Rum once, and it made me violently ill.  Mind you, it took a lot of it to do so...   :o:

Brandy had that affect on me at the age of 30.

Never really got into brandy, Clive, headed for port instead. Cue song. ;)

Scotch, Jack Daniels to be precise, had that effect on me too, in about 1986, and I didn't touch it again until very recently, but I have now acquired a taste for single malts.  :)

Do you favour peaty malts?

No, the ones in a bottle.  :)x

Actually, I haven't exactly tried loads, only Isle of Jura, and I've bought myself a bottle of Old Poultney for Christmas.  I do tend to save it for special occasions.  Too bloody expensive to have all the time!

You should try some of the Speyside malts, eg Tamdhu, Knockando, Glenlivet, The MacAllan etc.

I'd treat myself to a couple of these (http://www.aldi.co.uk/uk/html/offers/special_buys3_22253.htm) if I was flush.   (https://www.pc-pals.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv300%2FMothballs%2FSmileys%2Fsantacool.gif&hash=b1ba40b4833f937467e214c1f95024785551da4b)

Oh, I aim to try them ALL!   Might take me 30 years, though.

The most I have ever spent on a bottle is £35 but the single malt to which Rod refers is very tempting.  We buy an incredibly palatable Italian red for around £2.99 a bottle at Aldi's. I never thought I would confess to that!   ;D

Nice wine doesn't have to cost the earth.  In fact, on balance, I think I've had more grotty expensive bottles than grotty cheap ones.
