I am running windows 7 64 bit.
Starting few weeks ago, each time I boot up, windows loads and then wants to do a CHKDSK.
This takes a long time and when it finishes it starts checking all over again.
I can stop the operation by pressing a key within 7 secs at startup.
Also, I can and have changed the registry to stop chkdsk running at startup.
I installed a checkdisc program called checkdisc 1.3 and tried to run it.
It did not run because it said drive "c" was in use.
I have no idea why this is happening and any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Someone will be along with some advice soon, but does the machine run OK once started?

You having asked that question has now raised doubt in my mind.
Most applications such as photoshop, lightroom , word all work ok.
Internet browsing is normal.
BUT, over the past few weeks, the TV card has stopped working (software has been reinstalled) and my daily scheduled data backup is not happening because the programme reports that the external drive is full, which it certainly is not.
I guess this points to a corrupted operating system.
I have a mirror image of the partitioned drive that contains the operating system and programmes which was done at the end of January. Little has changed since then.
So I guess I will restore back to then and see if this resolves the problem.

That might be the quickest / easiest / best solution (delete as appropriate!). :)

Is the drive SMART capable. If it is, the BIOS should report whether it's OK at startup.
