MY 2000XP runs at roughly 50 - 60 degrees, is this too much?
I want to cool it down and make it quieter any ideas of an affordable fan and heatsink that will work on an Asrock K7VT2?
-
I expect Bat could get it down to 30 degrees for you Robotochan, but I think that 50-60 deg. is well within the recommended operating temperature for a 2000XP :)
-
I was looking at the Ebuyer reviews for fans and peeps had 2100XPs at 20 - 25 degrees. I was very suprised since my PC acts as a heater - I sit next to my radiator so I've turned it off :)
-
My pcs been running for about 6 hours, although only surfing, and its showing the CPU as 50 C.
Thats on a XP 2100+ so we dont seem miles apart :)
-
If I kept my PC on for 24 hours using SETI@home I could cook my sunday dinner on my mobo :D
-
Just looked at Mobo Monitor said my CPU was 80 degrees! Got worried as it slowly rose, then it got to 89 and my PC shut down. Went into BIOS after about 5 mins with my case open and it said 70 for the CPU and 50 for the system!
-
Which and how many programs have you been running and for how long to get it so high ???
-
Is the CPU fan actually spinning Robotochan? :o
-
Well my fan is running at just under 5000RPM
my PC was on for ages running music most of the time aand SETI@home all the time. Trying to catch up with Big_boss's lead of 32 :( I've turned of my radiator and opened my window for the time being. I'm hoping when I upgrade my PC that I will get a super cool heatsink and fan and some of that artic stuff :)
-
Sounds like the little green men have homed in on your PC for helping to spy on them and are aiming their cpu heating up ray guns at your PC :(
Looks like your only hope is to turn the SETI prog off before they fry it and possibly you :o
:kid2: :mg:

I run seti@home too Robotochan. I'm a member of The Register's team.
You can see my total here (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/stats/team/team_145855.html). I'm no. 39 ;)

WOW Nice!, Big_Boss and I are in Scotland's SETI http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/fcgi-bin/fcgi?cmd=team_lookup&name=Scotland%27s%20SETI (http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/fcgi-bin/fcgi?cmd=team_lookup&name=Scotland%27s%20SETI)
Well I have some good news for peeps living in Dunfermline, if there is any apart from Boss and I. One of the PC shops are opening again! The place where I got this one hehe :)
-
Very impressive Adept. ;D Wouldn't it be scary if we found aliens really do exist out there?
-
I wouldn't doubt that some of the peeps on SETI@home are aliens! The technology to do over 500 years of processing in 3 years is amazing!
-
Do you actually run the screensaver Robotochan? If you run the commandline version of Seti you can complete units much faster.
I also run SetiSpy (http://pages.tca.net/roelof/setispy/) which allows full control of the commandline client and SetiQueue (http://www.setiqueue.org/default.asp) which caches multiple seti work units so that, when the seti project is down (which it frequently is :( ) you can carry on processing using WUs from your cache. The results are stored until Seti comes back online.
-
oooo will have to try that :D

Funnily enough I saw that somewhere only last night. That was a long time ago for me so I don't remember where. If you say pc-pals I will have to kill myself. :heehee:

PHWARHARHARHAR I'm already running it boss :heehee:

How do i get the command line version?
From http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/download.html.
It's marked as WinNT command line but I think it'll run on Win98 upwards :)

PHWARHARHARHAR I'm already running it boss :heehee:

You still aint gonna catch me though ;D

How dare you show a picture of Serenity (I'd recognise that nose anywhere),and claim that its me Simon :P
-
But seriously back to the point what would be my best cheapish cooling setup? Would like it really cool so I can run SETI a lot. I got my Mobo today and it looks like a standard fan think for Socket A. No big square bracket :)
-
I have used https://www.chillblast.com/index.asp before, Robo, and they have quite a comprehensive range of fans. They also sell the Thermal Compounds. Your best person to talk to is Bat69, when he gets a minute to drop in. ::) ;D
-
Was thinking of getting this:
Coolermaster CP5-6J31C Socket A Upto XP3000 AMD Approved Fan and Heatsink: £7
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X3Jldmlld3M=&product_uid=40758 (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X3Jldmlld3M=&product_uid=40758)
and
this case and putting a couple of 70p 8cm case fans in it: £13
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=33823 (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=33823)
and this Antec Silver Thermal Compound: £7
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X3Jldmlld3M=&product_uid=28654 (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X3Jldmlld3M=&product_uid=28654)
Altogether that would be £27. Not too bothered bout the case as I don't stare at it all day and don't open it up ever month :) Question is: is the coolant and fan ok and will 2 fans be good cooling for my 2000XP?
-
I have one of the Coolermaster cpu fans myself Robo. They're OK , but as the reviewer on Ebuyer says, scrape the gunk off the bottom of the heatsink as it's not too brilliant ;) There's a thread started by Bat69 (who?? ;) ) here (http://pc-pals.com/index.php?board=30;action=display;threadid=65) which explains how to apply the thermal paste correctly. You may find that the fan on the coolermaster is a little noisy. Mine certainly could keepo me awake at night if I had to sleep in the same room as it.
I have 2 80mm fans in my case, one in front and one in the back. My cpu runs between 46 and 49 deg. and the system temp. is around 23 deg. If I switch off the rear fan the cpu temp. goes up to about 55 deg. so it's worth having. The front one doesn't seem to make any difference.
-
I'm gonna get one of the shops in the town to fit all my stuff after my accident with my Elite K7S5A mobo and 900Mhz Duron ;D If there is too much noise I'll just use noise insulators :)
-
Hi Robo ... sorry I've been away for a while
The best thing to do is get yourself a good heatsink... this is the thing that takes the heat out of your CPU ... I'd recommend the Thermalright SLK800 ... although this is a heavyweight (both in terms of weight and cost) but it works ... and also the Thermaltake Smartfan2 as my setup. These do make the difference.
You can go for a lesser sink tho, but with the effort you seem to be putting your CPU through, I'd err on the side of caution and get a good one.
Also ... have you enough case cooling? I'd recommend an intake and exhaust fan, and also tidy the wires within the box ... airflow can be severely restricted by all the tangle of wires. I think I've put some links to guides on the site. I'll try to make some time and find them for you.
Hope this is sufficient for you to start counting your pennies ;)
-
There you are Robo,The Ice Man Cometh at last ;D ;D ;D
-
Cheers chaps, haven't looked here for a couple of days :) Funnily enough 2 nights ago I ordered a system exhaust and a fan for the front of my tower unit :D Now I just want to sleeeeeeeeeeeeep for 2 weeks. Technological Studies exam was slightly harder than the Prelim :'(
Anyway to answer bats question about if I have enough fans. Nope not yet until my new ones come ;) The case is of bad design as the PSU is 2cm (about 4/5 of an inch) infront of the CPU fan. Little cool air flows from the PSU but a lot flows out so I'm going to buy another bigger case when I get £30 or so :)
-
My 2000+XP CPU runs at 47/50.C the system runs around 36/37.C thats with a bog standard HS&F, plus one extra intake and one exhaust fan.
-
Any idea of what CPU heatsink and fan I could get for around £15 which would be good? In my new case I will have 2 system fans, 1 at back and 1 at front and the system exhaust at the back too so my system should be chilled :)
What is a good air flow for a CPU fan?
Is the volcano 9 any good?
-
To be honest, Robo, I think you might need to spend a little more than that to get anything decent. It's not worth scrimping on, as a new CPU to replace one that a poor quality cooler has allowed to fry, will set you back a lot more!
Bat69 is the person to ask - hopefully he'll be about later, in the meantime, you could check out www.chillblast.com, who offer a fairly wide range, and also do the pastes. Obviously there are other retailers that sell CPU coolers.
-
The one I have now is probably worth about 10p in aluminium scrap metal :) I just need something to keep the heat down a bit. I have no idea what my new fans or the new case and PSU I will eventually buy will effect it ??? And for someone that still needs to save £97 to get the rest of the stuff I'm looking for one at a reasonably cheap price :) Either that or I start holding the worlds leaders at ransom will stupidly over acting actors trying to look evil :)
-
I got my case fan and exhaust :) Never seen my system above 30 degrees and the CPU seems to be staying around 62 degrees.
