Title: Microsoft Word hanging

For the past few days I have had a problem with Word.  When I attempt to open a document it takes an age to do so and then it hangs.  If I try to close it I get "program not responding" .  When I try to shut it down I get "Do you want to send an error report" which I do but it then when I close that it goes into a loop and keeps asking to send another error report.  The only way out is to reboot.  I sometimes have the same problem with notepad.

I've now disabled error reporting so that should solve part of the problem.  ;D

Strange that its only happening in text based programs,I would have suggested uninstalling and reinstalling office Clive but notepad is part of your OS not office so it is probably something else  ???

I was going to suggest that you try OpenOffice until I saw the bit about Notepad Clive ;)

It is very unusual for a simple program like Notepad to go wrong and take XP out.

I believe that Simon has had similar problems with Word ever since installing a security patch. Could the problems be related?

I don't think it can be caused by a security patch as I am refusing to install them.   ;D  Sure they are all dowloaded on my computer but in quarantine until Microsoft guarantees they won't harm my computer.   ;D  Let's see what happens now that I've put a stop to the error reports.

Clive, have you got the service pack (SP2) for Office?  I had a problem with Outlook hanging, but since installing SP2, everything is working well.

I think Adept ordered me to download that a few weeks ago when I was having problems cutting and pasting from Notepad into Outlook Express.

A quick visit to http://www.officeupdate.com/ will tell you whether you are up-to-date Clive.

Choose Product Updates from the left hand menu.

Thanks Adept.  The only update is for Outlook 2000 and I don't use that so I'm up to date.  I always obey orders you know!   ;D
