This little gadget (http://www.technoyard.com/hardware/miscellaneous/rd7-ca/page_1.html) keeps your fans running for a little while longer after you switch off your puter, stopping the disasterous build up of heat in the moments after power is lost to the fans

Not sure I'd get on with that.  I like to hear everything go quiet, to indicate all is well and truly off!   ;D ;D
