Originally my pc was a TINY package with a 30GB HDD running on Windows ME. I have since added an additional 80GB HDD (master) with the original 30GB HDD a SLAVE. However, I am unable to load up Windows ME using my TINY start up CD. The local pc shop tells me that it's because TINY place a "tattoo" on the HDD and I've somehow managed to wipe this from my HDD during format and partitioning, therefore the CD doesn't recognise my pc.
I loaded up Windows98 from a normal windows cd and everything seemed ok. I then tried to load up XP but this failed due to a cluster problem on my slave HDD. Now I can't even load up windows98! Can anybody help resolve this as I'm at my wits end and don't have much faith in my local pc shop. ???
-
have you tried it by taking the slave HDD (the tiny one) out of the pc and trying to install windows xp?
i can't see why you would have a problem as long as you avoid using the TINY cd at all costs, boot from either floppy or winxp cd, this should then get you up and running.
-
Hi arthurb :welcome:
Muggins' suggestion sounds right to me :) If you avoid the problems with the slave drive, by disconnecting it temporarily, you should be able to load XP onto the 80GB drive.
Once everything is up and running, you can then re-connect the 30GB drive and let XP try and sort out the cluster problem.
Does anyone else know whether the HDD "tattoo" thing is correct? I always thought these things worked by reading the BIOS identification string :-\ ??? If I'm correct, the restore CD probably won't work on the 80GB drive because it is expecting to restore to a 30GB drive.

I think you are on the right track Adept, I had a Compaq with a 8 GB HDD that failed. I replaced it with 20 GB HDD, and every time I tried to reinstall with the Compaq rescue disks it just aborted for the very reason you mentioned.
In the end Compaq tech services told me what do, which was a manual intervention on my part at some stage of the auto reinstall sequence. OK I cannot remember what it entailed right now, but I'll see if I wrote anything down somewere tomorrow. But I have a sneaky feeling I let the instructions go with the PC when I sold it. :-\
-
Ok I found the instructions for re-installing the Compaq rescue disks on a HDD bigger than that which came with the PC.
Now I don?t know what on screen instructions come on whilst reinstalling the Tiny disk or disks, but here is what I had to do with the Compaq disks [2]
As soon as you switch the PC on with Disk 1 in the CD-Rom, hold down Caps Lock and Num Lock both light 1 and A lights on top right of the keyboard should be light.
Then when the Blue screen comes on with ?Compaq Quickrestore? flashing, take Num Lock off , there should now be only one light left on.
Then choose ?English? [ out of the language install choices] and press Enter then select the model number of the PC.
When the next screen appears [the Caution one] and the top of the page is flashing press CTRL and Q keys together??..it will then install as per normal.
If the above does not relate to the Tiny install procedure, I?m sure if you ring Tiny tech support and you get somebody half decent on the line, they should know the oversize HDD install procedure as they will have come across it many times in the past.
It is always advisable when reinstalling an OS to reset BIOS to default settings for the install procedure, you can revert back to settings other than default after install.
Best of luck
Tony.
PS: take a min to do the CPU Poll ::) ;D

@arthurb
The Tattoo the shop told you about is actually a hidden partition at the front of the drive i.e. in front of the C:\ partition, This partition contains a ?Ghost image? that the CD accesses to reinstall the drive to as it was when it came from the shop, because you have altered the drive order e.g. moved the original drive to D:\ the CD cannot find the partition and so cannot reinstall the OS.
?Now I can't even load up windows98!?
Reinstall Windows 98se that will remove the dual boot option that XP will have installed to your 80 GB drive,
If you want to install XP on the 80 GB drive partition the drive into 2 or more partitions and install XP to another partition other than the C:\ drive/partition
When you have installed a working OS run scandisk on your 30 GB drive and see if the drive is failing or just needs cleaning up

Thankyou all for the advice. Today I disconnected the 30GB hdd then proceeded to load up windows98. This worked although I don't have any sound now. Could this be because it's a Tiny sound system or do I need to load up some other software?
After loading OS I connected up 30gb as slave and was able to use this drive normally. Progress at last.
Does anybody have step by step idiots (me) guide on how to partition and load up XP?
Tony, I did phone Tiny helpline today but all they told me was that the tiny cd would only load up to the original hdd as it is an OEM version of windows. I did try your method without success. Worth a try though, thanks.
Anymore help would be greatly appreciated.
-
Thankyou all for the advice.
We love to be of help ;) :)
I don't have any sound now. Could this be because it's a Tiny sound system or do I need to load up some other software?
You probably need to load the driver software for your sound card. If Windows has been provided by Tiny on a restore disk, they almost certainly will not have provided the sound drivers separately.
You will need to find out whether your sound card is a PCI card or integrated onto the motherboard (the latter is more likely with Tiny). Once you have this information you will need to find out exactly which model of sound chipset you have so that you can go to the manufacturer's website to download the correct driver program. You may have been provided with a motherboard manual which might shed some light on the chipset being used.

@arthurb
Just boot from the XP CD and when asked which drive to install to select the D:\ drive if thats what you want or tell XP to create a new partition on the first hard drive and install to there, just follow the instructions on the screen,
PS leave the file system in FAT32 rather than NTFS
Brian ;D
-
lobo
why keep FAT32 as opposed to NTFS? ???
-
If you have 98 or ME on the same PC then any files stored by XP as NTFS would be unaccessable to 98 and ME as they can only access FAT 16 and FAT 32 files,so on a dual booted PC it is advisable to use FAT 32 throughout :-*
-
Arthur I have just reread your first post,I assumed that you were dual booting before but now after re reading your first post I think that you just wanted an OS on that would work.
Is this assumption correct?
If so the reason that you couldnt reinstall 98 on after you had tried to install XP and and it failed to complete, would be that it had converted your drive to NTFS and therefore even after a format it would still be an NTFS drive.
Microsoft says that once its in NTFS it cant be reconverted to FAT 32 so you would be limited to Win 2K,Win NT or XP.
This however is wrong as Partition Magic(amongst other programs),I have been told will convert it back To FAT 32 :-*
-
@arthurb
If the drive is in NTFS you cannot access the data on the drive from DOS in FAT you can, so if your windows O/S fails to load you can boot from a floppy and access the files on the drive.
@Sandra
Hi Sandra, you can format a drive in FAT from NTFS by using a win98 boot floppy and fdisk or by booting from a XP or W2k CD and following the instructions
Brian ;D
-
Sandra & Lobo
I made sure I chose FAT32 when attempting to boot XP, since winME uses this system. I understood that I could change to NTFS later if required.
-
As long as you only have XP on then NTFS is ok Arthur.
Its only have you are dual booting (ie having 98 or ME on one drive or partition and XP on another),so that you can run in either OS that you would need to stick to FAT 32.
You can change from FAT 32 to NTFS at a later date in the same way that 98 and ME could go from FAT 16 to FAT 32 but not back again without reinstalling the OS :-*
-
Thanks Sandra. I'm slowly learning.

Lobo I phoned TINY today again and they told me to the word exactly the same. They also told me that the simplest way to load up ME eould be to borrow a copy of ME and use the product key given to me by TINY, which I seem tyo have misplaced :-[
I'll never buy a packaged computer ever again.
I've loaded up xp as an upgrade to 98 on my C drive and all went swimmingly. Now I only need to sort out my sound and internet connections.
Looks like I'll be picking your (pc-pals) brains for a while yet.

I said exactly the same arthub, after I bought a Compaq, little upgradability, basically old hat components by the time I bought it. And unable to transfer software from the Compaq installation disks if you bought another PC. Not really knocking em ::) just not the kind of kit for someone like me ::)
That's how I ended up here, when I realised even Simon could build his own.... I thought ;D ;) Now I've got a full set of OS/programs able to transfer to a PC of my choice, and a home built PC with upgradeability built in.
OK not every thing goes to plan on occasion, but it's all grist to the mill, a learning curve that makes you wiser than you were the day before. Even though your PC may not quiet work as you want it to today, you know with a little help from your friends here at PC-Pals it will do eventually. Then you get the bug for tinkering, and along comes prob number..... all go fun ;D but the bottom line is your gaining knowlage all the time.
Have fun mate.

Arthur, you might find this useful:
Q. I lost my CD Key (Product Key) for Windows 9X/Me/2000. How can I find it?
A. When Windows is installed, the Setup program requires that you type in a 25-character Product Key that is on the back of the CD (jewel) case or on a certificate on the cover of the Gettting Started/User Manual. During the Windows installation the Product Key is stored in the Windows Registry. You can find it on your computer by clicking Start, Run, and entering regedit. Click the plus signs to expand the branches in the Registry until you reach:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version
Scroll the right pane until you find ProductKey.

Its Productid in XP simon (It is in mine)

Ain't this the product key: right click My Computer click Properties and it's there on the Genral Tab under Registered to
-
Well, I just searched Google and got this:
http://www.duxcw.com/faq/win/prodkey.htm
Obviously not as helpful as I had hoped. :(
-
Ain't this the product key: right click My Computer click Properties and it's there on the Genral Tab under Registered to
Yup that's the one Tony
Of course, for later versions of Windows 98 and above the product key is actually a 20-digit Alphnumeric code (e.g. ABC56-FG5GH-GH67F-SD43S-SKS9L). I suppose there is a program available somewhere on the 'Net that will translate that ProductID to the 20-Digit CD code ...

That's a very nice link. Thank you Lobo. But it gives only Windows and Office codes. Is there any other way to find other products codes? ::) Or perhaps I'm dreaming a little? :-\
What Simon and Tony mentioned was the way to find the product number not the code (or perhaps I didn't well understand). What I'll be happy to find is the code. :-*
Thank you.

@joudi
Just for you my friend, this program from my own site lists all the product and serial information

First, I want to ask Arturb to execuse me by asking things not exactly his subject. As some comments were little away toward the programs number I wanted to seize the occasion and ask som informations.
Lobo, Thanks a lot for that link. It's certainly useful. I'll keep it for some uses in the future when the need is there. But it'll be nice to get the "installation code" of certain products, not the license number and not the version number. The link that you posted yesterday: http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml
was wonderful. It gave me the "Installation Code of Windows XP and Office XP".
To make the matter clearer, I have my restoration CD which contains many programs originally. It installs them every time I make the restoration. Some of these programs I need them to be installed on my other bootable Windows XP on the same computer. It asks me to write the code number (or caracters) which I don't have. (Or if I want to install them on an other computer that belongs to me, I can't.)
Do you think that there is a way for that?
Thank you
-
@joudi
If the CD is a recovery CD then it?s not possible to load individual programs from that CD, it contains an image of the programs rather than the actual installation files need to install the programs in Windows
Sorry
Brian ;D
PS the code that the installation program is asking for may be the CD code not thr Windows code

Brian ;D
OK. I'm just about to lose it and throw this damned pc out the window.
I called TINY who told me to download drivers for my hardware from their support site www.tiny.com/support. I did this and was unable to find drivers suitable for XP.
I've still no sound from my Creative Sound Blaster 128.
My keyboard isn't functioning properly. ie when I press Shift ' I get inverted commas. My keyboard is a Chicony KB-9805.
I did download the Windows 98 drivers in the hope that this would suffice. No joy. However, I'm not entitely sure where I should be downloading these drivers to. HELP.
On the bright side ;D my printer and my modem are working tickety boo :D
-
@arthurb
Its operator error not operating system error my friend,
you have got you keyboard settings set to the USA settings, change them by opening control panel, region and language settings and change to the UK settings
Get your drivers from here http://uk.europe.creative.com/support/drivers/welcome.asp (http://uk.europe.creative.com/support/drivers/welcome.asp)
Brian ;D
-
Thanks LObo but I'm still not sure about where I download these drivers to, or will I be advised by the website where to file them?
-
When you get the drivers unzip them and then either just double click on the exe or go to update drivers Arthur and tell it to get them from where you unzipped them to :-*
-
Lobo
you were right about the keyboard settings. However, I changed them to UK but the keyboard still has the same fault :'(
I did get the driver from the site you recommended, however I've still no sound.
Sandra
I followed your instructions without success. I probably need a step by step idiots guide for this. Forget probably I mean definately :-[
Using Device Manager, my pc states that there is null sound card or scanner installed. :'( >:(
You guys could probably fix this in seconds if you were sat at my pc.
Challenge for the weekend. Fix my pc, I'll promise not to bother you again and I'll buy you all a drink in the Cyberspace Bar.
Please make me ;D instead of >:( :( :o :-\ :'(
-
OK. I'm just about to lose it and throw this damned pc
Been there NEARLY done that ;D
You'll crack it mate, and be more knowlageable after the event. These probs may appear to be driving you around the bend, but better to look on them as a learning curve ;)
I cannot add anything to what has already been said, but with freinds in the know like Sandra, Adept and Brian you'll grt it sorted.
I've said simulare what if somebody who knew what they were doing was sat at my PC.........but YOU would'nt learn nowt, well nowt you would remember, chin up.
-
Ok Arthur, lets see if we can get to the bottom of your problems.
Firstly the Keyboard
After going to Control Panel and selecting Regional and Language Options, select English (United Kngdom) at the top section and United Kingdom at the bottom under Location.
You must click APPLY then ok for this to take effect, not just OK.
You have to reboot(I think) before it will change it as it will be currently in use,but I think it tells you that after clicking on apply .
Can you tell me/us if you have an onboard sound card or a PCI one,it may be that it isnt enabled in your BIOS but lets find out exactly what you have got first and if you could let me/us know what the motherboard is,then that may be useful too :-*
-
Just a thought with the sound, Arthur, but the speakers are plugged in to the correct socket, yes? Sorry if that's too basic, but sometimes the simplest things can be overlooked.
-
Good point Simon,I was round at someones house last Sunday and amongst other things the sound wasnt working.
As the lead to the speakers had a red plug on it they had plugged it into the red socket not the green one.
Another common mistake with speaker leads is plugging them into the modem,if theres a PCI modem fitted,as there are 2 more sockets on those usually too.
I dont think that this will be it in Arthurs case though as the Device Manager is telling him that his soundcard isnt installed :-*
-
Sandra
The keyboard settings are definately set for UK English.
The soundcard isn't a PCI. It must be on board. The only information I can physically see on the board is: K7S5A D17NE14902252. This replaced my original TINY motherboard last year. I received a disc (MAINBOARD Ver 1.0s) with it which I've tried to load up but the cd isn't compatable with xp. A few days ago when I originally booted up with 98 the sound was ok.
I've double checked the connections and they are all correct.
-
Sandra
The keyboard settings are definately set for UK English.
Hi arthurb!
Just a thought :-\ It is a UK keyboard isn't it - with a £ sign on the 3 key? (God I sound like Simon now :o )
You'll find the sound drivers for your motherboard at this site (http://www.ecs.com.tw/download/driver_sound_m.htm)
-
@arthurb
Right click on MY computer, select Properties, Hardware, Device manager, double click on Keyboards and check what it says, if its correct it should have something like "Standard 101/102 key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard".
If it says that then the keyboard is OK if not remove the device from Device Manager and reboot your PC this will allow XP to reinstall drivers for the keyboard (you can do this anyway it may help)
Brian
-
Adept, I tried this but when I clicked on the specific download I was greeted with -The page cannot be displayed. ???
-
Keep trying arthurb, it's working fine from here. Maybe your ISP is having problems connecting you to that site for some reason :-\
-
Hi Arthurb,
Sorry to be too simple in my answer. I admit that I'm not capable to help much, and I'm like a small star that disappear easilly when the son of Lobo, Adept and Sandra and some others is there. But just a thought passed in my mind, I hope you don't mind to try it.
Some Keyboards have on them bottons to control the sound, like: " Volume + - " and "Mute". Perhaps without attention you've pressed the button "Mute".
Please don't be botherd for this simple answer if it's not the case, and excuse me again.
-

Success at last ;D. You were right Lobo. I did change the setting as instructed but I only found out last night through tinkering about that both the Keyboard and Language were set seperately. ::)
"Keep trying arthurb, it's working fine from here. Maybe your ISP is having problems connecting you to that site for some reason"
Adept, I tried again without success. Any ideas ???
How do you reply with multiple quotes in this forum?
SOUND PROBLEM: In Device Manager there 3 yellow ?!. These are for the following;
Multimedia Controller PCI Slot 3(PCI bus 0,device 13, function 0)
Multimedia Audio Controller (PCI bus 0, device 2, function 7)
Device Status for both is
"The drivers are not installed (Code 28)
USB Human Interface Device USB Scanner
Device Status "This device cannot start (code 10)
Does this throw anymore light on my audio problem?
-
Try disabling your firewall before accessing the driver site as sometimes a firewall can block a website.
-
Replying with multiple quotes is a bit fiddly, but what I do is prepare the first reply with the first quote, then without posting that reply, cut and paste the whole thing into a 'new' reply, which can then include the second quote, and so on, for example:
How do you reply with multiple quotes in this forum?
If this is your first reply, you would then cut this, and go back to the next post you want to quote from:
I'll only admit to git :bald: :slug:
Then you can reply to this one, pasting the first 'reply' (including quote) in above the new one, and so on, so your post appears like this.
I actually built this with notepad, and pasted the whole thing back into the reply. The complete reply post would look something like this:

I hope that makes sense, Arthur. I expect Brian or Adept will come along and explain it in three words!! ;D ;D
-
I think that we may be getting somewhere now Arthur :)
As the Audio Controller drivers arent installed I think that it may be the motherboard drivers that need reinstalling/updating.
Unfortunately I am a little busy at the moment but I will see if I can find what you need later or maybe someone else may find them for you if you cant locate them yourself :-*
I just had a quick look and found this which may help,I wil try and look again later :
Error code 10 is a driver issue. Either the driver is installed wrong. Or it is the wrong driver for that board. Did you try the ECS website for the drivers? You need to look at the board and determine which sound system you have. Either SiS 7012 or C-Media 8738 You can find them here:
http://www.ecsusa.com/downloads/drivers_sound.html

Where on the board might this be and will it definately be marked?
-
The motherboard manufacturers site should give you most of the information Arthur.
Sometimes though they can use different components for the same model of board.
Have you got a programme such as Si-Soft Sandra ?
That would give you the motherboard information without you having to look inside the case and check which kind of chipsets it had etc :-*
-
I have just downloaded the motherboard manual and it appears that your board has a SIS 735 chipset and uses AC97 codec on board sound.
This is a page with your motherboard specs on :
http://www.topmic.com/Top_Micro_Files/Motherboards/ECSK7S5A.htm (http://www.topmic.com/Top_Micro_Files/Motherboards/ECSK7S5A.htm)
Driverguide.com only seems to have drivers for 98 and ME but I am still looking :-*

Lobo, this is a fantastic program! :D
The light is now at the end of the tunnel. I've got a few more things to iron out before I'm done though.
RE: USB Scanner.
I know you can fix it. ;)
-
Glad its sorted at last Arthur, I knew that wed get there in the end one way or the other :)
Whats the scanner problem, did you post about that yet ?
USB stuff usually wants the software installing before the equipment is connected :-*
-
I have gone back through this thread and see that you said it wasnt detecting the scanner Arthur.
Have you any other USB devices that are working at the moment?
Did it work ok on 98 so is it a case of searching for drivers for XP again or is it new?
-
How do you reply with multiple quotes in this forum?
Its simple you just copy the information you want to quote then click on the Add YABBC tags: last one on the bottom right is the quotes tab which puts the quote tabs in you message for you quote] "Put you message here [/quote
just click and paste in the middle of the brackets
I hope that this is Ok

Multimedia Audio Controller (PCI bus 0, device 2, function 7)
Device Status for both is
"The drivers are not installed (Code 28)
This is my MERCURY TV Card. I've tried their website also http://www.kobian.com (http://www.kobian.com)without success.
Do you think I need a BIOS update for XP for my motherboard :-\

No, its a driver problem not a bios problem

Arthur, try putting your scanner directly into the PC usb port so that you can eliminate any problems with the hub.
Is the hub a mains powered one,I think it must be if your port lights stay on after the PC is off?
If it isnt, then mains powered ones are usually better as the max. available current per port is only 500ma.
Usually hubs dont have any software or drivers to install as long as the usb ports that they are connected to the PC through are enabled in BIOS :-*
-
I will try plugging the scanner in direct.
In the meantime, I have another wee problem. Don't know if it's related to any of the tweeks we've been carrying out over the last few days. :-\ The following message comes up on the screen at switch on. When I press OK it tries to boot up again and again. If I press F8 when booting then select boot from IDE 0 then it boots up ok. I've also tried pressing ESC at boot up, which ignores memory test and this also works.
Isass.exe - System Error
An I/O operation initiated by the Registry failed unrecoverably. The Registry could not read in, or write out, or flush, one of the files that contain the system's image of the Registry.
Any ideas? ???
-
Cant think why its doing that Arthur, maybe Adept ot Lobo will know.
In the meantime try this :
Right click on My Computer and select Properties, then Advanced then Start Up and Recovery Settings.
Untick Automatically Restart under System Failure and see if that sorts it out for you,if its still the same then go back and retick it :-*
-
No idea on this one ???
Have you tried a Scandisk arthurb?
-
Isass.exe
Even Microsoft seems to have no clue what causes it. Not surprizing. The only real common cause anybody has uncovered is that most of the machines with the problem that ran a virus scan before repairing DID contain assorted viruses but no real pattern to it.
The only answer is a compleat restore or new installation

Sandra, I tried to do this last night but was not allowed unless ALERTER was running. I tried to follow the help & support guide but was unable to. There was slight differences between the guide and the actual display :-\
This problem doesn't happen every time I boot up. ???

Lobo I'm reluctant to do this at this stage as I've loaded alot of software back on to the pc. I guess I'm hoping that it's due to the system not quite set up properly yet. :-\
Could it be anything to do with my winME image on the D drive?
Have you tried a Scandisk arthurb?
Yes I have and everything was ok. :)

Sandra, today I tried putting the scanner directly into the PC. Same result. However, found scanner software on my TINY Extra cd which came with my original system. I loaded MGI Photosuite and Textbridge. Still no joy. ???
I'm pretty sure this is my scanner FU661E, from Tiny. VISIONEER 4800 A4 FLATBED SCANNER.

Yes it is mains powered and I seem to recall calling the shop where I purchased it from asking where the software cd was when I was initially installing it 2/3 years ago, as it mentions it in the instructions and I seem to recall that he told me it doesn't need any.
Where to now folks?

No, It?s an XP registry problem and it won?t get better

Thanks Lobo. I'll try this tomorrow.
Why do you think the Error only happens sometimes and what is the worst that could happen if I don't re-install?
-
Its not finding the required files for some reason Arthur, but sometimes it is doing,so it starts up ok.
Is you BIOS set to boot from floppy first, then IDE 0?
If so you may find that if you set it to boot from IDE 0 first then it may be more consistent seeing as it boots from IDE 0 after pressing F8 ???
-
Could you remind how to get the BIOS Screen up? :-[
-
Depends on the type of PC Arthur, some use delete key as it starts up and some use F2,it will say as you start up if you look at the bottom of the screen just after the memory check,it will say F2 or DEL for setup depending which type it uses :-*

Hi Arthurb,
I'm not going to teach you because my knoledge is very limited. I'm going only to tell you what I would have done if I were in your shoes.
I reviewed all the posts in your subject, I would have decided to put the "Partition Magic" diskets to wipe totally both hard disks again and reformat them to "NTFS". Then make the partitions that I want. After that I install Windows XP and that'll be all.
I know It'll seem to you too simple or even crazy because you don't like to erase again after installing many other programs. Well me, to avoid head breaking with unknown problems that manifest themselves from time to time and in many ways here and there, I would have done it.
Why I'm telling you that?
I think, you well know that if you like to install multiboot system you must install the older Windows first and after that the more recent. I understand that you want not to make multiboot but only one.
Because you tried to install different Windows versions, probably everyone of them left some traces (elements) on the hard disk. And non of them was installed completely as it should be. Sometimes you try to install the more recent first, some other times the older first. The elements from each probably got some conflicts or didn't fit to be with the others on the same computer. So, they were never wiped totally by the alternation of different Windows installations.(It happened as if you were making multiboot not respecting the order that the older one must be first.) That's why I think it's better to wipe bothe disks totally and to start again by using them like version ones.
So, instead of going and searching from site to site for drivers and other elements, you have the Windows XP which will install by itself everything you will need.
Please Adept, Lobo Sandra and others, don't lough at me because of my analyse. I well know that I am limited in computer matters. But anyway I just wanted to express myself.

Thanks for taking the time to read all the posts. I'm keen to hear any views / advice. However, when the computer shop techs hadn't a clue what was wrong I set off on this never ending journey. I've learned a few things on the way. I probably will do as you say but having been a wary convertee to XP I thought it would be best to get everything up and running as a trial.
-
Sorry I hit the post button before I'd finished.
What is PARTITION MAGIC? Will it definately erase the "tattoo" the shop tech said could not be erased?

To erase the hidden partition use a program call zap.exe that will remove all partitions hidden or not
joudi is correct, the best way if you want to dual boot is to install Win98 / ME on your IDE drive 0 and then install XP on another partition/drive
Brian ;D
/me fixed the / me problem :)

Sandra
I changed the BIOS to boot up from IDE 0 first but I've still got the same message appearing occasionally. :( While I was checking the BIOS I had a look at all the parameters which could be changed. How do I know what should be disabled, enabled optimised etc. I obviously don't want to change things without being sure of what should / could happen ???
Still no joy with the scanner,USB Hub or TV Capture Card (I downloaded the latest XP driver from the manufacturers website- no change). ??? :'(
I'm demented. Anybody fancy a straight swap for a Sinclair ZX81?
Where is the "Devine Intervention" key on pc's?
-
I have been following your plight with interest Arthurb, and have decided that I will remain with WinMe as I would end up in the looney bin if I encountered all of your problems :o. I hope you get there in the end ::).Good Luck :go:
-
Where is the "Devine Intervention" key on pc's?
That would be the FORMAT C: option Arthur ;D
Without seeing what each option in BIOS is Arthur I cant really tell you which to do,and some of the stuff in there looks like it is in a foreign language to me at times ::)
All I can suggest is that you only alter one or possibly 2 things at a time and see if it makes thing worse or better, write down what the original settings were before you changed them in case you get any problems and that way you can change them back.
If it comes to the worse then you can always select load bios defaults.
DO NOT alter anything to do with the CPU clock speeds so if anything has XXXmhz leave it as it is :-*

Brian ;D
Where can I find this zap.exe program? Is it part of Partition Magic? Today I purchased a pc mag which included a free cd with PARTITION COMMANDER on it. I haven't studied it yet but at first glance it looks similar to PARTITION MAGIC.
Has anybody used or heard of this?
I think I've decided to totally wipe my HDD's, Partition them and load ME (I've found my product key, all I need now is a copy of WIN ME) and possibly XP.
