Title: HOW HOT IS YOURS
Post by: Tony on August 11, 2003, 22:00

I'm talking AMD XP CPU's here folks ::)

Reason I'm asking is, there seems to be a wide but considered [by AMD] satisfactory 'normal operating range'

For instance, I've built two PC's both with XP2000+ CPU's, one with an extra case exhaust fan, and an extra intake fan. The other with no extra cooling, but with plenty of side panel?s ventilation.

The latter running around 48C. and the other running around 44C, when I did comparison tests. And in both cases, system temp was about 10 degrees above ambient room temp.

However I know Simon has built two PC's and they are running hot, with high system temps, but best let him come up with the figures.........please Simon  :)

I have just built a XP2200+ based PC, and it is running around 61C for the CPU and System 37C, when ambient is at 29C.

Now apparently, according to AMD see here (http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/DownloadableAssets/FAQ_Rev05_ENG.pdf) 60C-65C is considered normal.

I do not want to get side tracked into a 'what is considered normal' discussion, so let?s just accept normal as ....normal ;D

Here is what AMD briefly summarize as normal operating temperatures. An approximation to the typical reading from a BIOS or external software utility is expected to be around 60C-65C or lower now this PC I have that has reached 62C had a very hot case, but that is considered to be within the normal range. Now consider my XP2000+ running at 44C.......to 65C is a bloody big range if you ask me.

Adept told me, the max operating temp for a XP2200+ is 85C so it's way off that mark, but it still nags me that I can have one running at 44C and another at Scoooochio 62C.

Come on know I've taken the time to write and research this, so let?s be hearing your temps, running whatever kind of chip. If you don?t have a temp monitoring utility, you can reboot, enter BIOS and read it there

My 2000XP used to run at 70 or more which would cause my PC to restart. Eventually the stock build AMD HS & Fan started dying so I upgraded now it runs at 54C. But tomorrow when I get my exam results I will be buying 3 rather fetching blue LED fans and a HDD cooler so I'll tell ya once I've got them sorted, I'll also be getting an 80mm fan upgrade on my HS soon too

I'm not one of these rich buggers who can afford to splash out every other week for new kit ::), but my Athlon 1.3 (don't laugh) runs at 51C with a case temp of 24C.

Running an AMD 2100 XP + CPU with 512 DDR 2100,no extra cooling other than its standard heatsink and fan.
According to Si Soft Sandra :
Board temp is 49 C
CPU  temp is 53.5 C

The PC is built in a cupboard so it hasnt got the best air circulation around it :doggie:

I recently upgraded to a Athlon 2.4 with the hs & variable speed fan that ebuyer reccomended.... :)

I've got the fan running at 4000rpm and my cpu temp is 47c...and i'm happy with the noise level at that speed... ::)

If you turn it down to 3000 rpm....you can hardly hear it...but the cpu goes up to about 54c.. :-\

Ohh and bye the way..i just slapped on the supplied paste none of this sanding and Arctic paste.. ;) :P

No idea what the temp of mine is, AMD K62 500 mghz chip, 192 meg ram standard h/sink and fan.
It's been running perfectly in a room that is 30+C.

Get me new one tomorrow, bet that can't stand the heat. ;D

Jeez Robo,

what did you replace it with, that was some drop.

The cooler I'm using is rated up to a XP3400+ so should do the job, anyway I'm going to lift it off and repad it, nothing ventured nothing gain, or cocked up as the case may be  ::)

Mustapha, remind us again what size your getting. I had a K6 200MHz, the heatsink and tiny fan fell off. So I suspended it above the chip with some green plastic coated plant tie stuff [knew even less than I know now..then] :o still working though, a neigbours got it

Sorry not to be around tonight - been showing my mate his new PC.  Sorry Tony, forgot to check with new one   ::)  but mine is now reading CPU 59C and System 49C, so lower than during the day, but then the outside temperature must have dropped a little, not that you'd notice, I'm still swealtering!

I swapped it for a AKASA 785CU, same one Big_Boss has running his 2600XP  ;D PLus I got a new case, the PSU is far away from the CPU now so less heat around the CPU altogether.

Just ordered with my exam money:

Fan Adaptor & 29CFM 25Db Fan (To replace CPU fan)
3 Blue LED Case Fans
and a HDD Cooler

I've just lashed out on a couple of Akasa case fans at £1.49 + Vat each  ;D

But you wont beleive this, fired up the new PC, Bios said 61C and the case warming up nicely, but I could not load Windows [another story  ;D]

Anyway whilst I'm wiping and reinstalling a save Image file of that HDD, up rolls a man in a Van. He brings two case fans, a bottle of CPU/Heatsink cleaner and some Thermal interface pads. Sorted HDD out, booted it up just to check it was loading Windows. I checked the Temp and 'Bugger Me' if it wasn't recording CPU at 50C. and System at 34C. ambient 26C.  I must have frightened the CPU to death, with all them bits, HO HUM as Simon would say, thermal pads and cleaner into stock  ::)

Now running at 53C. and System at 36C. ambient 28C. Ive managed to get the mointoring software for my MSI Mobo, working on this ASRock Mobo, only thing is CPU is System and vice versa.

Hooky,

you forgot to ring what we are looking at......you sw**k with all those icons  ;)

Anyway Cammy beat you with a 47C on a XP2400+ I think, and co to think about it, I beat ya on my XP2000+

It's now running at 47C on one exhaust fan, I disconncted the intake fan so I could do some comparison tests with this new XP2200+ PC. ;D ;D

But seriously, thank you all for your input.

Just got ta get Simons Hot Boxes sorted and Haywards Heath fire service can stand down  ;D

PS: Hooky, I can bring my CPU temp down by 10 Degrees on my MSI Mobo PC, it has this XP cooler button. It makes the CPU run at 100% [ in Task Manager]Whilst I wrote this PS bit, it has come down 7C to 40C already, but thats cheating.  ;D

Sorry Robo,

You nipped that post in while I was not looking,

My PC is built on a MSI KT333 Ultra. bought it last September £76.50 no onboard Lan, only  2x USB ports on an adapter that took up a PCI slot. Not a bad board, other than it looks over priced today compared to Asrock offerings.

The one I built for a friend was on a ASRock K7VT2 built round a VIA chipset, like yours, only £29 from Dabs.com, but a bloody well built board. They are a newish company out to grab a slice of the Mobo market, and you do that by offering quality feature packed Mobo's at rock bottom prices. So impressed I was that this new PC is built on a K7S8X, will support upto XP3000+ 8XAGP FSB 333MHz Onboard Lan, 6xUSB V2 See Here (http://www.asrock.com/product/product_k7s8x.htm)and all for the heady price of £38.50, a STEAL. ;D

Ok I installed speedfan to see what temp my CPU etc is at on my laptop.

It reports...

HD0:   55'C
Temp3: 26'c
Temp1: 22'c
Temp2: 22'c

When minimised it states 22'c in the system tray.

There is a flame sign next to the HD0  ??? I take it this is the temp of the hard disk.

I'll reboot and see what my BIOS says EDIT> It doesn't tell me temps in the bios!

Is the temps looking good or bad at the moment?  ;)

DJ

Any suggestions on how to cool down the hard disk then?

As I said its a laptop - so I doubt if I can do anything physical (i.e. stick a huge fan on to it  ;D ), but is there any settings that I should check?

Thanks  :P

Here you go Hooky,

Running temps as normal

And running temp when I active the Cooler XP button as you can see you can set alarm for temps and fan speeds and voltages, by sliding the blue range buttons. As you can see CPU limit is set to alarm at 59C. cool eh  8)

Of course, it sits on the bottom tool bar as an icon, run your mouse over it to display CPU temp.

Sorry DJ I cant think of any settings that you could alter to cool your laptop down apart from most laptops these days drop the CPU rating when on batteries to conserve power so if you are happy running at a slower CPU performance that should cool it down a little, dont forget to recharge it after youve done with it for the night though :)
Not sure how much it would effect the hard drive temperature though :doggie:

I opened the side of my case earlier. My CPU went down 10C and my system 15C  ;D

@Tony Asrock is the "cheap" make os ASUS but I've found that not only are they cheap, they are the best damn motherboard I've seen. Not had one problem unlike a few of my friends who spent £120 and got duff RAM slots etc.  :D Nice motherboard you got there  ;D

Got A Question: Which way does a CPU fan go, does it push air into the HS or suck it away? I've heard of people using them both ways.

Funny you should say that Robo, as Simon is using an ASUS board in that new build, and he commented in the simularities between the two. I'm sold on them Robo at this money

I'm sure air forced over the heatsink is the industry norm, as the heatsink is to all intent and purpose a heat exchanger. Taking the heat generated by the CPU and removing it via conductivity. And the fan removes the heat from the sink by disipation, ie; blowing it away. But if your an experimanting sort of a guy, why not try it both ways, and monitor it temp wise.

But you have got to consider the HeatSink manufactures must have it sussed, mines blowing air onto the heatsink.

PS: I'm currently on the new PC, and readings are ambient 25C. System 36C. CPU 50C. My PC is System 35C. and CPU 46C. but I'm going to do a clean install on that one because it seems sluggish compared to the new one.

Following on from that, which is the best way for a case fan to blow?  Is it better to suck hot air out, or blow air in?  And does it matter which way round you fit the case fan?  I have mine with the wires on the 'inside' if you see what I mean, i.e. not the side the fan is fitted to the case.

The way i understand fin cooling is that the heat radiates to the fins and then the fins should be cooled . :-\..just like on a motor bike.. ::)

Therefore the fan should be blowing on the fins... :P

But anywaysup.. ;)...probably works fine... 8)

Errr I thought that questioned had been asked , and I had answered it [for my part] Boy your inpateint Simon  ;)

I have mine with the wires on.....very technical  ;) Case fans are mulit directional, in that you just turn em round. They reckon for every Exhaust fan you have you should balance it with an intake fan. Exhaust at the back of the case, intake at the front.

Simon  for instance if you have a PSU fan blowing hot air out of the back and a case fan directly under it drawing air in, you would just de circulating the hot air. So the rule is , in at the front and out at the back. Blow some ciggy smoke into the fan and see which way it goes.......I take it you have taken to the cigs since you started building this last PC   ::) ;)

Success!!! I have just fitted my fan adaptor and new 80mm fan  ;D On full load my CPU only went to 52C  :o which is 6C cooler and the heatsink is 4C cooler. System temperature is only 45C which is 6C cooler and my HDD goes from 30 - 65 as normal  ;D I took pictures of the whole install process with my new digital camera so I'll post a review/install topic soon enough  ;)

EDIT: Slipped in again Tony  :P I put mine facing the HS so air was blasting into it. High pressure air was pushing at the back though, I think this is what's causing my whole system to cool  ;D As for system fans when I get my 3 LED fans there will be 2 intake and 1 exhaust as I already have a system exhaust in a PCI slot and my PSU  :)
Title: Re:HOW HOT IS YOURS
Post by: Tony on August 13, 2003, 22:39
Way to go Robo,

two intake and two exhuast fans eh, that should keep it really cool.

On my PC besides the PSU and CPU fans, I have an exhaust fan and a intake fan. However as I was comparing like for like with this new PC I've built, I had the intake fan disconnected. But I reconnected it tonight.....CPU 43C. System 34C. and Ambient 27C.
Running the intake fan seems to reduce the CPU and System temps by 4 and 3 degrees respectivley.

The view is, the cooler the system the longer it will last. Leading on to another question,  anybody sell their 'babies' on when they upgrade ?

I would be very cautious in my approach, Robo.  As well as disturbing the flow of air through the case front-to-back, you're also building a giant Hoover which will happily clean your room of any dust and smoke particles and deposit them in your case.  Cute is good.  Fluffy isn't.

My case is already full of holes  ;) They never gave me any extra expansion slot covers or bay drives. Anyway my room isn't that dusty. My PC feels sorry for the other one  ;) Dust is everywhere in the other room because my brother doesn't hoover or dust  :o
Title: Re:HOW HOT IS YOURS
Post by: Tony on August 15, 2003, 22:20
Your right about the dust Rodders, on my Suntek case there is an fan support assembly [for want of a better word] That is postioned to suck cool air in from the front /side and blow over the HDD bays.

So I bought an extra fan, drilled the case side and let it whizz. Boy does it drag the dust in, of course on installing intake fans you don't think it would be a problem. But thankfully most of it gathers on the fan housing, and the fan it's self.
Title: Re:HOW HOT IS YOURS
Post by: Robotochan on August 15, 2003, 22:25
So where should I put my fan? I'll get a dust filter as well  :)
Title: Re:HOW HOT IS YOURS
Post by: Tony on August 16, 2003, 00:36
Intake fans should be positioned as close to the front of the case as possible. With the exhaust fans at the back, thus insuring a cool flow of air over the HDD's and the system board eventually rising to the top to be exhausted by those fans.

Fitting bang in the middle of a side panel may look nice an sysmetrical but will most likely hinder the correct flow of air.
 ::)
Title: Re:HOW HOT IS YOURS
Post by: Robotochan on August 16, 2003, 09:51
The thing, is... I will have 3 exhaust fans because I'll move one of the intake fans to the back, and I'll have a HDD cooler (the company don't seem to realise what next day delivery is) and then I'll have 120CFM coming in somewhere from the side. So basically the motherboard will get tonnes of cold air on it and my exhaust fans will try to get it out  :). The front intake will give the HDD cooler air and it will also cool that part of the case as well  ;)

write well i just added 3 80mm fans one acting as an outtake fan at the back and a dual 80mm fan at the bottom taking air in from grooves in the case. After about 5mins the temp of the cpu dropped to 47oC and the board temp dropped to 31oC not bad really.

My XP2000+ is running at CPU 47.C Sys 33.C with one additional 80CM exhaust fan.

Best PC I built was a 2500+ Barton, one additional exhaust fan in same case and the CPU ran at 38.C

XP1800 running at 45c with the CPU fan running at a lower speed 2350 rpm running at top speed of 4000 rpm brings it down to 39c

Probably need to blow out the dust build up in the fins on the heat sink to bring it down a bit more  8)

hi there just letting you all no i moved the outake fan the single one from the back and put it into the two spare cd-drive slots so its blowing out across the cpu. Wow massive difference the cpu temp comes down to 38oC and the board temp down to 29oC wow  :o give it a try and see if you get the same results. that a lot cooler. i have an xp2400 if u aint read my posts further up ::)

Just to add a little here

I have an XP2400+ which is clocked to the equivalent of an XP2700+.  I've a rather large copper heatsink with a thermal controlled fan on top.  The heatsink is lapped to a mirror finish and I used Arctic Silver III thermal paste (not that it needed much after the lapping)

Now despite being overclocked, it only runs at 36 deg and under load that rises to 40 deg

Having a good heatsink and fan is the answer to hot CPUs
