Title: Front Page Trouble
Post by: Simon on August 17, 2003, 22:44
Don't know if anyone can help with this, but a friend is trying to do a web design course, which is based around Windows 98, however, he has XP, and has managed so far, but has come upon a problem, something about needing a file from a 98 disc, which he can't load into XP.  Can anyone make head or tail of this?

The following instructions apply to Personal Web Server 4.0 as available with Microsoft Windows 98.

Open Folder add-ons/pws on your Windows 98 installation CD

Open the setup file

The Personal Web Server Setup dialogue box is displayed

Click Next

Select the Typical installation and click Next

Click Next to accept the web sevice directory.

This will complete the installation of the software, now restart your PC.

The next step is to install the latest version of the Frontpage Server Extentions to Personal Web Server.

Use the Windows search tool to locate and open the file fpmmc.msc

The Microsoft Management Console is opened.

Is there any way to get this to work with XP, and of not, are there any alternatives?

What happens when you try the 98 cd in Simon and follow those instructions that you listed?
Does it just refuse to install it  ???

As far as I know, yes Sandra.  Incompatability with the file systems perhaps?

I am not sure what a cd stores its files as but XP should read NTFS and FAT whereas 98 wont read NTFS but I dont think it would be that as whatever it is it should still be able to explore the cd I would have thought  ???

Well, this is what I thought, but he says whatever he tries to do, he can't load these particular files into XP.  He said he has spoken to the person who runs the courses, who has told him the required files are present in XP Pro.  I don't quite get that.  Am I right in thinking MS stopped including Front Page in their OS's after W98/SE?  Is Front Page included in XP Pro?  Perhaps if he loaded Office XP (which does include Front Page), he might find the files he needs?

He hasn't got Office, Sandra.  I've just searched for fpmmc.msc on my PC (which has Office XP and Front Page installed), and couldn't find the file.

If any Front Page experts want to come in on this, please don't be shy!   ;D ;D

Has he got Frontpage, is he using Frontpage ? I'm no expert, but I think Frontpage server extensions are needed if you wish to upload directly from Frontpage web pages or alterations to web pages made using Frontpage, instead of using an FTP programe.

I've now determined what the problem is.  It's the Personal Web Server 4.0 which does not work on XP, but does work on XP Pro.  So the answer is to get XP Pro.

Sandra - you have a PM.   :)
