Frequently when I boot up my PC I have a file on my desktop called "~". It's an archive file and usually updates itself.  I was wondering 1. What could this file be? and 2. What is it for?  ???

A file name ~ is usually a temporay file.

If I remember rightly Sandra had a similar problem a while back - maybe she can shed more light on it ??? ;)

Yes, I  think it's something to do with sending attachments in Outlook Express, following one of the updates, Lona.  I think it's safe to delete, but not sure how to stop it appearing again.  Hopefully Sandra will know.

Another reason to switch to Mozilla Mail?   ;) ;D

The ones that I get are .dat file Lona, if you rename it to .txt you wil be able to open it and read it in notepad or wordpad or word.
Mine always come if I add a new contact to OE and it has the address and information in so now I just delete them straight away :doggie:

Thanks Sandra, they usually appear after I have been in outlook express, so I will just delete them.  :)

If the problem is not yet solved Lona, that may be helpful:

Hope at least that it makes you understand what are those files.
