Somebody gave me a video CD of a movie which is supposed to play on PC. I have inserted it into my dvd drive and rom drive but cannot get it to play. Am I supposed to install it? It's 500meg.
-
Look at the disk with Explorer, Lona. What kind of files does it show?
-
Lona, if its a vcd (mpeg1) then it should run using windows media player. as it doesnt autorun try opening windows media player first then find the file to play.
if it is an s(uper)vcd then it will need a program such as power dvd or windvd to play it as it will be in mpeg2 format.
;)
-
If you double left click on it Lona it should open into about 4 or 5 files click on mpeg segment and that should play in your default movie player :-*
-
The disc has 6 folders.
CDDA
CDI
KARAOKE
MPEGAN
SEGMENT
VCD
I tried to open VCD folder in media player but it said the format was not supported.
The CDDA folder has nothing in it
-
Just click on segment Lona :-*
-
The segment folder is empty Sandra and the mpgan folder is in notepad and it will not open.
-
lona, is MPEGAN a typo do you mean mpegav, that is the one that should contain the actual video files.
-
Sorry Dave it was a typo. When I try to open it, the damn think won't open and now the bloody drawer is stuck. I will reboot and see what happens.
-
if you open media player, click on FILE then OPEN,
(find the drive that the disc is in, and ensure file type is media files(all types) it should run.
if it doesnt then you probably have an svcd file which needs a plug in to run. try a search engine using the words "svcd plugin".
-
The PC would not shut down. I had to switch it off. Got the disc out on reboot. Tried disc2 but the mpegav folder which is in notepad will just not load. I give up ???
-
sounds like you've assigned mpeg files to open in notepad. if you right click on the mpegav folder and select "open with" you can change it to media player. then instead of clicking the mpegav folder, try open windows media player and play the file as previous post. i'm off to bed now but good luck.
-
Dave followed your instruction to the letter and it worked a treat. I don't know how it got into notepad. The person who gave me the disc must have had it in notepad for some reason.
Thanks a million :-*
-
No they didnt Lona,it was your PC that was set to associate those file extensions with notepad :)
Did you remeber to click the little box that says always use this with this file etc? That way you will be able to open another one straight away :-*
-
Now who would set my PC to do that Sandra? Not me must have been somebody else ;D. These computers have a mind of their own sometime ;)
-
It annoys me at times especially when you install something and it decides to associate loads of file extensions with it and you havent been watching closely enough and let it do it.Then have to sort stuff out again next time you want something doing with what you used before >:(
-
The easiest way round that, Sandra, in case you hadn't thought of it, is to re-install the original program on top of itself - then it should reassociate the files.
-
do you have POWERDVD or WINDVD lona. they are generally much better than media player. i'd be inclined to associate video files with them instead. you could even copy the files from the mpegav folder onto your hard drive and remove the need to use the cd at all.
-
Of course you can do that Simon but it would be better if I noticed as it was installing which files its associating with it.Unfortunately I tend to let it get on with it and then regret it later as I have to then find out which it has claimed and deal with them later.Usually its better to go into the options and find which its taken over and sort them out there as if you reinstall the first one you then end up in a loop as it takes over the files the second one wants again :(
The best way I suppose is to sort it out as its installing to save messing about later.
How big a hard drive have you got Dave :o
You dont need many VCDs to soon mount up to a fairly large number of gigabytes :-*
-
60 GB hard drive. got the contents of 38 video cd's on it and its half full. ok its currently knackered and needs replacing but you can squeeze a lot on when things are working ok..
;)
-
Thats ok for you big boys Dave :o
Up until a few days ago I had a 3.1 gig drive and a 4.2 gig one and if I got a movie on I had to delete it before I could fit another on :(
Its even worse now as my 3.1 drive was laid to rest yesterday :'(
It started feeling ill on Monday evening and appeared to have recovered after a good dose of wiping it and formatting it but to no avail,I only prolonged its pain and my suffering by a few days more ::)
It is now residng in the chapel of rest(dustbin) before being buried sometime next week :'(
-
I know how it feels, Sandra! (https://www.pc-pals.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Femoticon.go2.be%2Fsad%2F1318.gif&hash=7550576d52f047ef716dcc672704414504b95a83)

maybe we need some counselling. i'm going through my second "loss" of the year.
:(
-
I do have a dvd player software. I will try and open it in there dave? ;)
-
Try it in any media players that you have Lona but dont click to associate all those files with that program until you find the one you like the best :)
