ME really is a complete bag of poo, isn't it! My soon-to-be-ex missus has decided that she's going to be the new owner of my laptop, so I did a full clean reinstall of ME from the bootable install CD, which has a Ghost file containing ME and the drivers.
Not long after I'd downloaded the ton of updates required to make ME usable and then adding a number of security apps, I was hit with a BSOD right out of the blue. On re-booting and going through the CheckDisk rigmarole, REGENV32.EXE was found to have corrupted. The original file is around 72k, while the repaired file is 60k.
This is apparently a well-documented problem, but why doesn't Microsoft provide a downloadable replacement, for goodness sake?
Oh yes... I did extract a copy from the CAB in windows/options, but found that corrupted, too!
Anyone got an original? PM me. 8)

Give me a few minutes, Rodders, and I will see what I can do. My WinMe disc is not a complete copy of WinMe but HP's restore disc. I will search for that file and send it to you ASAP. :D
-
Found File and it's on it's way to you. Let me know if it works. :)
-
Nothing yet! I'm just wondering whether my ISP blocks executable attachments. ???
Edit: Smelling pistakes.
-
I sent it to your pals addy, Rodders. If you PM me a different addy, I will try again. :)
-
Sorry, Rodders, the email just came back to me and said I will have to zip the file and then send it because it is an exe file. Hang on there :)
-
Result! Cheers, Lona! (https://www.pc-pals.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hogarth-hq.com%2Fsmileys%2Fwaving.gif&hash=b7c0713a1724978a80dde6e2fd7e159001e43983)

I've just checked my REGENV32.EXE and mine is only 60k but I've not had the problem you have had Rodders. What exactly is it for?
-
It seems to be a handler for Environment Variables, and writes to the registry whenever ME is shut down. There's a lot of related stuff that can be found on Google when searching by the filename.
-
Lona:
I've just checked out the Zip you sent me, and found you've included the wrong file. Could you have another crack at it, please?
-
going back to your original point rodders, ME really is a pile of crap, more unstable than iraq. get a bsod every day without fail. having said that at least you dont have to ask bill gates's permission to make a few hardware changes :-X
-
Hmmm... Good point, Dave! (https://www.pc-pals.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hogarth-hq.com%2Fsmileys%2Fcowboy.gif&hash=9c7b1059d86fb6d54812f299364e9d88efbd0a85)
-
i've sent a zipped copy of it to your pcpals addy
:)
-
Cheers Dave! I was kind of hoping for the 72k version, though. I don't suppose you could have a butchers in Cab 17(?) of your Win ME disc for the original? ;)
-
Sorry Rodders if it was the wrong file but I sent you the file you asked for which was REGENV32.exe. Is it a different file that you need?
-
Rodders, I have sent the file off again, tell me if it is correct this time. :)
-
Thanks for persevering with this one Lona, but while the Zip you are sending me is named REGENV32.ZIP, it actually contains the file REGSVR32.EXE. Third time lucky? ;)
-
On it's way again, Rodders. I hope it IS third time lucky. My finger must have clicked on the wrong file when I was zipping it up the first time. :brick:
-
Thanks Lona, but it's still the 61k version, rather than the original one from the cab on the installation disc. Sorry!
-
Sorry I couldn't help, Rodders, but as I said I don't have the installation disc, only HP's restore disc. :(
-
Sterling effort, though! :-*
-
Sorry Rodders I don't have the disc either ...... I'm sure I did have, someone else must have it, for some reason :o ;) Hopefully Dave will be back :)
-
I cannot believe that you are the only person to have ever suffered this ridiculous problem Rodders. Have you had a trawl through the "Useful sites" board? Hook and others have put a lot of websites on there.
-
had a look through the original ME disc but couldnt find the cab files ....got my gallons of red wine head on. ended up clicking on a file i didnt recognise and it changed some settings. doesnt seem to have done any damage though...aargh where are the cabfiles located ??? ???
-
Theyre in the windows folder itself Dave, or they are on 98SE (called win98), I usually drag that folder over to a part of the hard drive if I install 98SE so that when it asks for the cd occassionally you can just tell it to look in that folder for whichever file it needs :)
-
thanks sandra i'll have another look tomorrow when my brain and limbs are talking to each other again. :P
-
blast I found my disc but its the same as lona, not the me disc but a restore disc. And the one on my machine is the 60k one? Why does it have to be the larger one?
-
Oh, it seems there might be a problem with it being 60k as it should be 72k.
There is a long lengthy explaination here and with what to do.
edit - deleted thread, it looked like I'd mixed up the two there lol - I'll see if I can find it again. It wasn't even on pals :o
:blonde:
-
Michelle, that link leads to an empty post. ???
-
sowwy this is it ........

-
I suspect that Rodders will have seen that one Michelle. I don't think it actually got to the bottom of the problem. It's very strange isn't it? :'(
-
Well there's all this stuff at the bottom saying "this is the fix", but it doesn't make much sense to me. ::) >:( :)
-
I've been asking some friends and received this reply:
"Clive,
I have several copies of windows ME, including full versions and an upgrade version. The 'regenv32.exe' is in the win17 cab file and they are all 60kb. Where does the 72k version come from. Sorry I couldn't help with a 72k version."
I'll give him some background information and see if his CD's are originals or backups.
-
This is really getting bizarre! After the file corrupted, Checkisk converted the unrecoverable remainder of the file into a .CHK file - leaving a repaired file of just 60K. If the file was only 60K in the first place, where did the orphaned data come from? (https://www.pc-pals.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hogarth-hq.com%2Fsmileys%2Fscratchit.gif&hash=f0e37750b7a4a5f37e8dd18e25e8ded26e7196cb)
-
Was it just a backup file it made possibly Rodders ?
-
No Sandra. I selected the option to convert the unrecoverable part of the file to a .chk file.
The problem is that the installation of ME was performed from a bootable CD which restores/overwrites the existing contents of the HD with a 'Ghost' image. The original REGENV32.EXE is therefore inaccessible without a copy of Ghost.
Having said that, ME now seems pretty stable, considering it's running with a knackered REGENV32. (FLW)
